I am going to be taking the primary cover off to take a look at how everything is looking inside. Other than obvious things, what should I look at especially close???

My service manual says to throw away the shifter seal. Do I really need to replace that or can I reuse it???

Primary cover is off and all looks really good. I can not see any damage of any kind. Oil was really clean, drain plug had very very little metal on it. I think that I am in good shape there...?

Why are you taking the cover off? Is there something wrong? They are sometimes hard to get back without having a leak. I would look for worn and/or broken parts.
    Disconnect the battery first.
Do you have a new gasket and fluid?
Also, is it a good idea to use gasket sealer on a HD primary cover? Is so what type?
I am going to put my cover on tonight after replacing a starter drive gear.

No, nothing wrong, just wanted to open it up to take a look because I haven't since I bought it. Just going through it because Hot Rider and I are going to be on the road a lot here soon so I wanted to try and catch it before I am left on the side of the road... Oh yeah, I readjusted to prime chain and just wanted to make sure that I didn't screw that up as well..:D

Yes I have primary oil, I didn't disconnect the battery but did take off plug wires, it is an extreme pain for me to take the batt cables because of how I have things set up.....

Kind of, but there is a purpose...Tonight when I have everything back together (primary), I am going to drain the forks and change the fluid to make sure that there hasn't been any water in the system. If there has been then I guess I will have to take those off and replace what is needed. Doing these things is so much easier when you have a bike jack...:D

No, but if the SM says to look for something like that then I guess there has been some sort of issue...:roflmao::roflmao:

Hotroadking: have you ever used silicone sealant on a primary cover gasket?
My shovelheads have a tendency to leak!? HA, imagine that~!

Tommy no but we've thought about it LOL

Black Sillycone is oil resistant, and probably what
    you'd use.

I doubt HD makes one for the shovel but the new HD gaskets have a metal center and
different material that compresses (not cork LOL) and work great, you really have to clean
those surfaces and have a good clean surface for the gasket to work properly.

Thanks. I'm gonna clean the surface with carby cleaner and put black silly cone on both side of the gasket~!
If that doesn't seal then I will weld the cover on~! LOL

Does anyone have a diagram available for the torque pattern for the primary and derby cover for a 96 Sportster 883 Hugger? I cannot find it in my SM and there has to be a specific pattern...

    Thanks.

Now this is experience talking, I know that there are specific patterns for stuff like this....For some idiotic reason they don't have it in the SM, not in a huge hurry, I rather be cautious rather than reckless...:D

100-120 inch pounds...from the center out... is what I remember.

Or, just use your 3/8 ratchet with the torx bit or allen head and rest a little pressure on it and you'll do fine, Do not over tighten. :D

Are you serious??? That is weird that they wouldn't give a specific pattern. Not like heads on a car I guess. I was going going to just start torquing then another member of the forum said to follow the pattern. I told them that there wasn't one....Got thinking that I should ask to be safe...:banghead:
