I have a 2 into 1 V&H Pro Pipe on my 99 Fatboy. It was on there when I bought it and it's the first one I've had so I don't know anything about them. I don't know, or how to tell, if it's the HS or not. I have two questions.

    1) It is starting to discolor a little where the 2 turns into 1. Is this normal with these or do I maybe have a little leak in that spot?

    2) Do these come through with a baffle or is one available? Mine doesn't have one and I think I would like to get one. The local fuzz sent me a very nicely worded post card about a "curtousy check for informational purposes only" that they were conducting; and of course they're brand new decible meter would be "available" for use. Yeah right! I'll be the first one there. NOT!

As always, any input would be greatly appreciated. Ride safe.

I forget how to tell if it is the HS model. Depending on what pipe it is you should have a choice of baffles for them. When they first came out there were three baffles you could get. One was the standard baffle, one was the torque baffle. Both these baffles were capped off and the exhaust goes around the cap, through the baffle and out the end of the pipe. I think the standard baffle was longer alowing more air to get through. You didn't mention the can discolouring ,just the y pipe so it sounds like you have either the competition baffle..straight through or nothing at all. CD should be able to help you better. The can will discolour with a baffle in it. I think with the y pipe discolouring you may have the original pro pipe. Depending on what's been done to your motor you may see an improvement in rideability in it. not to mention making your neighbours happy. I had a hot rod Dyna a few years ago with a Thunderheader and when I went with the Pro Pipe my neighbors just about threw a block party to celebrate.

The HS stands for Heat Shield. The original pro pipe did not have a heat sheild covering the "Y" and every one I saw was turning gold at the y. V&H sells a shield that covers the y for the older pipes and the new model has the shield included. There are 2 baffles for the pro pipe, torque and competition. The torque baffle is short, about 7 inches long and the competition baffle is about 12 inches long with alot more holes. The competition baffle makes the most noise but has a very nasty dip in the torque curve from 2000 rpm to close to 3000 rpm (just where we normally ride). Both of these baffles have a cap on the end closest to the engine. As for the discoloration on the pipe, many hours of polishing with BlueJob will remove the color but it will come back quicker than you would like. All things said, the ProPipe with the torque baffle does a very good job. My 96 Road King is Fuel Injected, has a mild cam, Keith Black Piston, Screaming Eagle heads and is putting out 82 HP w/89 ft lbs of torque and when I put in the competition baffle it falls on it's face leaving lights.

Thanks for the refresher. I remember losing a case of beer on a bet that the Pro Pipe wouldn't show better numbers on the dyno with my 89 incher. I used the baffle that came with the pipe. It really worked well. I had a 2000 E-G. I put a jet kit in it, A SE air cleaner and a Pro Pipe. I sold the bike because I didn't want a big fat Harley, I'd rather ride my Ducati. I sold the bike to a friend of mine...to make a long story short I'm touring around on a '04 E-G, injected, SE air cleaner, 95 inch..stock mufflers....I'm trying hard to be quiet..but that old '00 pulls harder

I guess I have the HS then because I do have heat shields on the Y pipe. It is the front of the main "muffler" body where the Y and the main body meet that is turning sort of gold.

I might try the torque baffle and see what happens. Right now it appears there is nothing but a cap on the end since I can run the broom handle all the way to the Y.

    Thanks for the input.

The "torque" baffle is the standard baffle that comes with the pipe when new...so it must have been replaced...any chance you could get that back? I'd think about having your bike dyno tuned while you're at it and make sure that Air/Fuel ratio is dialed in correctly...if you are turning gold all the way back at the muffler you may be running overly lean...or excessively rich and dumping unburned fuel into the exhaust where its completing its burn.

If your a/f mix is good and you are getting a complete burn in your motor, you should only blue the headers maybe 8-12"

    Tuning

I'll see what I can find for a dyno. I know there isn't one in town but I should be able to locate one somewhere fairly near by. In the meantime, I'll do some adjustments and see what happens. I have been told by people riding behind me that it smells like fuel so I'm probably too rich rather than too lean. It's a Mikuni carb. I still have the book for it with the basic tuning procedure. I'll go through it but the pipe was already like that when I bought the bike, before the Mikuni was installed. I'll see if I can clean it after I'm done and see if it comes back. Thanks for the input.
