I think my starter is bad. I have a Heritage softtail, 2001. I do not have a book on this bike. Is there an easy way to remove the starter?

The wires were burnt & when we tried to start the bike, smoke came out from under the seat & the wires were totally burnt.

I would say frist off you'll nedd a service manual , cause you have more trouble then maybe a bad starter ,if you have wires smoken you have a big short smoewhere , A wire rub raw somewhere in the starting system , but first get the SM & it will have the wireing diagram ,I would start at he ing & work out from there

Steven, I have a 00, the bikes are pretty much identical

I would agree with Chuck, go to the HD dealer and get a Service Manual, it's not that expensive (compared to screwing something up) and to remove a starter on a softail is a pretty extensive job.

If you can wrench and have the tools and patience go for it, if not you might want to let the pro's have a go.

Here are the steps. ( I don't think I'm forgetting anything but get the sm)

    1) drain oil
    2) remove Battery
    3) Remove rear tire splash guard
    4) Remove Accy, switch, plate behind splash guard
    5) remove screws holding down fuse block under seat so the wire harness will be loose
    6) remove oil tank (bolts to the frame up top, and two under the harness, disconnect drain hose from drain connection on frame and then Pull oil Tankfrom frame to the right side of the bike, being careful
not to tear any wires on the harness, you'll have to work it out.
    7) remove shifters, floorboards (Front and rear) on left side of bike
    8) Drain Primary
    9) Remove Primary cover
    10) Loosen jackshaft bolt, do not remove jackshaft (you probably can't anyway
    11) Remove two allens from starter holding it to inner primary and remove starter from bike (disconnect green wire from end of the starter first) and be careful to not loose the jackshaft/starter coupler, and when you take it off put an arrow on top facing the starter so you know which way it goes back on (Yes there is a wrong way)

    12) Reverse the above to reinstall.

Taint hard but it's a lot of work and the price we pay for having the cool oil tank above the starter...

An OM is not a SM. The owners manual won't even come close it is just general BS get to know your bike stuff. The service manual is a tool that covers the in and out and how tos. I wouldn't waste money on OM but I won't go without my SM. I know the Sporty has 3 total. SM, parts manual, and electrical manual. Service and Electricals are must haves, parts is just REAL handy but not required.
