I know there are some safety features in the software to prevent spam posting etc but I wondered if we could change a few things, if not no big deal.

    1) Max length on posts, It's like 3000 characters, that is pretty low never have run across it on any other board (yeah I'm wordy) like the Steps I posted for fixing the stator for one member, I had to split it, and since there is no "counter" for when I type you have no idea until you try and post, then you have to figure out where to split it. Basically it's a PIA but NBFD... :witsend:

    2) Now 1 leads to 2, in that you have to split the post, if you successfully
select enough characters to remove from the first over wordy post, then you have to sit there and refresh or wait for 30 seconds to repost.:gah: 10 Seems reasonable, Hey I'm a busy guy gotta go, get a few minutes to post between calls on the phone, clients etc. LOL

    3) Time between posts also ties up time between Private messages, really do we need a delay on PM times?:cussing:

    4) Switching forums or clicking New Posts, Another Delay, :banghead:

OK I think I got to use all the frustration emoticons :roflmao:

In reality the board runs fine, fact is we all are busy, and cutting these times down or out would be great....

    All good points.

    1) The post count limit was put in place to deter endless rants or huge spam posts. I can up that limit but not remove entirely. I will need to look at some posts that were split to find a middle ground.

    2) Time between posts. This is in place to prevent what are called Floods, a type of hacking or spamming that floods a forum by way of a bot that auto posts machine gun style. Without the limit a forum can be flooded by more than a million posts within seconds, thus leading to a server crash.

    3) Same applies to private messages though I can look into decreasing that limit.

    4) Not sure about the delay when moving between forums. Either I'm too slow to notice or someone needs to clean their mouse :p

LOL yeah I agree and understand,

I cleaned the mouse, found it was full of cheeze whizz maybe that's it.

On the time to forums I should have said I use the "new Posts" link at the top so I don't have to go forum to forum. If you read a post, and have nothing to add, or just don't want to add, if you go up top and click the view new posts link, you have to wait 20 seconds to see the list, I just hit the back button twice to avoid it.

Its not moving from forum A to forum B I should have been clear.

I would think 5000 to 6000 would cover it don't want a ton of huge posts I agree.
could try upping it to 5K and see what happens, always can cut it down

Also how about the limit on pics per post - 4 seems like a low number.

HRK, I think you need to speed up the old computer. I use the new post button all the time, no problem with time.

I personally don't like the long wordy posts and find myself not reading it all.

I agree with this. There is a lot of info that can be provided. Actually, so much that is impossible to be able to relay ot all. In school, I have learned that it is actually most effective if you can get your point across in the fewest words possible.

Example: If I have write an essay on Lean Manufacturing, in APA Format, and one of the requirements is that it has to be 1500-2000 words, You will get docked a grade of you if go over the requirement.

Sometimes more information is less benificial.

Here is my two cents. Maybe the website should have a premium membership that would cost X amount of dollars per year and would allow the purchaser to write longer posts and the ability to upload higher quality pictures or more lower quality pictures. This could offset some of the costs for the site. I did not see a tab for premium membership, if there is point me in the correct direction and I will gladly pay for a year subscription.

I was thinking more on technical posts where you are putting in a long description
like how to check out the charging system for someone that needs the instructions.

    I agree less is more...

Again, all good points and I appreciate all the ideas and input.

I frequent MANY forums and personally get irritated when I come across one that wants a fee to access premium services. There are several forums that make you upgrade to their paid membership just to open picture attachments or access premium services. When I come across this you know what the first thing is that I do? LEAVE.

When I migrated this forum over from what originally started as CD's support forum for Direct Parts, I promised those who had been long time members that the forum would remain free and not a commercial venture. While there are a few sponsor ads they barely come close to offsetting the cost (software licensing, hosting). Other forum sites are actually run by corporate web publishing groups who own hundreds of sites (v-twinforum.com and harley-davidsonforums.com to name a few) making big ad $$ yet still push premium fees.

Bike Talk will always be free but in doing so there will be minor limits on things that cause bandwidth issues. Keeping image posting limited (within posts) allows the site to still load quickly while avoiding more expensive hosting.

The text count limit should be increased shortly.

Thanks Ken - I didn't think about bandwidth until you brought it up and I have to agree with you. I too am on one of the forums that want you to pay to see the pics and I would much rather be here than there - besides the class of people on here are much better than the "other Forum".:D:roflmao:
