i have a 1981 xlh thats is leaking from behind the front sproket. I am wondering if it is the seal or could it be the main bearing? Leaking badly!!

Being an '81 it is probably a worn spacer and seal. Replace the both and you should be okay. Unless the output shaft bearing is shot which you can check when you get it apart.

Buy the service manual, best tool there is.
