The starter is bolted to the inner primary but should just need to unbolted, you do need to remove starter drive. There are I believe four bolts on the inner side of the primary that need to be removed. Also there is an additional bolt on the inside of the inner primary.

Been awhile since I did one I hope I didn't forget any thing.

    Good luck Tom

The starter pinion gear must be removed from the starter. If you are careful, the jack shaft from the starter will remain on the starter when you pull out the shaft. There is no bolt on the back of the inner primary for the 2000 big twins. As has been said many times in this BB, the most important tool in your box is the service manual which details the whole job and would have saved you the delay.

Service Manual.... shows everything, torque specs and tighten sequence

Yes the starer must be disconnected, you have to remove the starter bolt and gear from inside the primary and the starter bolts from the other side.

there is a coupling between the starter and the jackshafte behind the inner primary, be sure you mark it's install direction, get it backwards and the starter won't extend properly.
