The style of my 07 stock solo seat for my Street Bob just happens to compliment the design of the rest of my add ons, so I'd like to put a little bit more padding underneath (like a gel?) It's in mint condition and I'd like to do this without changing the looks much at all. I once looked for gel pads to buy and have someone in my area install it underneath the seat top cover, or do it myself, and couldn't seem to find much. Any tips, suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Just so happens I wrote an article about this.

    Custom seats

This guy can do it long distance, and he does an incredible job. Check out the pictures. He feels that gel is a gimmick, that if the seat is made to fit the rider, gel isn't needed. He'll use gel if someone insists though. He asks for pictures of the rider on the bike from several angles, several measurements, and asks what your trying to get out of the seat.

Check it out and give him a call.

Wow Hot01 looks like he does some really nice work. Funny I saw this because I was looking at a new seat when I went to the stealership today. $229.00 for an H-D seat. Only difference was it was a little wider and deeper. I couldn't tell if it would've been any more comfy....(all kidding aside) How do you know unless you try? I do need a new seat for my Dyna. After about an hour or so my butt and hips hurt, I wonder if I should email that guy?

when looking at the seat from the bottom, determine if you think you can reattach the cloth back to the seat-frame. if you can, then remove the cover. then mark where the gel-pack goes. use an electric carving knife, or knife of choice and cut part of the pad. put the pack in place of what you cut out. recover and reattach. the worse that can happen is you take it to a seat guy..........:)

Wow is right! Thanks Hot01, that's exactly what I was curious about. It so happens my stock solo seat is almost right, so I think I'll see if I can simply lift the cover, and then add just a touch more padding. Glad to know gels aren't considered a great solution, I'm not locked into anything in particular. I'll look around upholstery shops for thin, but well made foam and try that. Something like the memory foam of my mattress might be good, but I'm interested in hearing about any other suggestions.

I do have a very comfortable two up seat, so I can happilly use that in the summer, when I take most of my longer rides. Still, I think at some point down the road I'd like to have a seat made that's similar to my stock solo seat but with better lines where the front and back meet the bike's tank and rear fender. I'll definitely check with Steve Gowing when I'm ready.

Anyone here ever get the chance to compare real leather to the faux leather seats?

I had a gel pad installed in a seat back in the early 2000 and I think they are a gimmick also, it didn't seem to change a thing for me. If you don't put a little bit of foam back over the top the gel will hold the heat and cold much longer than the foam.
There are some other good seat guys out there, I use this guy.

I you leave the gel pack seat out in under 30 degree weather will it become an Ice Pack.

Now that would have some benefit, I could drop the seat in the deep freezer overnight before a hot summer ride... hmm.......

I have this Harley Davidson jacket that has pouches inside that you fill with water and it supposedly keeps you cool and hydrated. I used it once and it worked, except the sleeves were made of mesh and were really sweaty. Too bad the sleeves weren't something like denim, that breathes naturally, it would have been great.

I'll let everyone know how it turns out when I try adding some more padding to the stock seat, before I try any other more expensive solutions, thanks for the help.

Foam carpet padding works good to pad a seat.

I probably won't have time too mess with it for a few weeks. I'll probably go to stores that sell foam and look for something like the heavy duty memory foam they make beds out of, my bed is great, so it might be OK on my bike.

I had my seat rebuilt at Mean City Cycle in N.C. They have a few diff. options. They do nice work also. 5lb., 10lb., memory foam, comfort pad etc. 1 day service, but 2-4 weeks out on scheduling.

Thanks guys, now that I've got some options, all I need is some extra cash ;) My bike got knocked over last week, so my play money is shot for a few weeks. I needed new levers, derby cover and a few other things. Nothing like coming outside after lunch to find your bike on the ground. Still, it could have been a lot worse and it was my fault for parking around the corner to stay in the shade instead of right where I could see it.

That icon is awesome Lucifer! I gotta learn how to do something like that.

Don't know, it was just on the ground. Funny thing, it's the second time a bike of mine was parked and knocked down. Both times, it was the left side (kickstand side) that was down. The first time an acquaintance saw an SUV do it, but was too far away to see a plate number. I can't imagine how a bike goes down on the kickstand side, unless it's hit hard enough to rock backward and then the kickstand automatically goes up and then the bike goes down. Kind of makes me wonder if a spring on the kickstand is a good idea or not.

I'm thinking on purpose. Still, it could have been a lot worse. I'll look into a different kickstand. Mine automatically goes up.
