    Hello,
I'm getting ready to jump into the re-jetting on my carb and wanted guidance on which kit and what jets to try. Stage 1 basic or Stage 1 deluxe ?

    Bike: 1998 1200 Custom sportster
Mods at this time: Stock exhaust with mufflers punched out and K & N filter with stock can with three 3/8 holes in bottom. Plug removed and running at 3 turns out at this time. I pulled the plugs and they are the 6r12's, the front cylinder looks great, the rear is bright white. I've been fighting a lean condition and thought a re-jet would be in order. I also have just ordered a set of Cycle Shack slip-ons. I want to buy a kit but wanted advice on which one and what jets to try first???

    Thanks
    Phil

Hi Phil, I just purchased the basic kit and I'm thinking that I should have bought the deluxe kit instead. I had a hard time keeping the original intake gasket in good enough shape to reuse. It has a sticky coating on the outside of it, and between me touching it and a few gas drops getting on it, there is no way I can reuse it. I believe the deluxe kit comes with a new intake gasket and a few more parts that are easy to replace.

There is a guide included in the instructions that shows which jets to use for each engine. The instructions are pretty good, but just take your time and don't try and hurry through it......like I did.

If you have the money, I would just get the deluxe kit.

I just bought the basic kit with the EZ-just and will proceed on with my project.
I will have to wait on the Cycle Shacks to get here and in the mean time will be putting in a set of Progressives in the front to help with the sluggish feel and bottoming out issues.

Update on the CVP kit install

Well, just finished the Cycle Shack slip-ons and the 45 pilot and EZ-Set screw install on the 98 1200C. I have been fighting what I thought was a lean condition with a little sputtering on take-offs. I pulled the carb apart(left it on the bike for jet and ez install) Pulled the pilot and cleaned it up and noticed it was not a 42 but a 48. With the K & N and the Straight drags I had poor performance and carb farts, so I assumed the previous owner just hadn't rejetted, well I guess he did but went up too much. Put the carb back together and adjusted the EZ screw out from seated to a 2.5 turn out setting for a starting point. What a difference, great throttle response, no sputtering and better performance. I will ride it to work tomorrow and see how she acts in 98 degree heat, but as of right now I'm very pleased and would recommend this kit to anyone needing a good start at tuning after mods.

    Thanks:)

First extended ride with CV kit

Well, I finally rode the bike to work today. This was my first ride over 4 or 5 miles since my carb work and exhaust. The temp was a little cooler this morning compared to my initial run after install (Which I reported as being very favorable and running good). My commute to work is mostly hiway and about 25 miles, I did not let the bike warm up much before take off and did have a couple of stumbles within a couple of miles or so and then none once fully warmed. The acceleration getting on the hiway was great and had no issues while riding. When I did finally get to work, I came to a idle and let the bike run for a bit before shutting her down. Seems my idle is a little high, so I'll lower it some.

I did try to pop the throttle while it was idling and it stumbled and took a little bit to catch up. I'm running at 2.5 turns out and wonder if I should maybe go to just 2 and see what happens. I know this will be just part of getting it dialed in to run as good as she can so I'll keep poking at it. On the EZ-Set screw, It was a little loose on initial install. I ended up putting 2 wraps of teflon tape on it and it seems to not be moving now.

    Thanks

I would start by just lowering the idle speed a little. It may have hiccuped a little because of that.

The EZ-Just being loose happens every so often because of how those carbs are cast. The teflon tape will keep the screw from wandering.
