I have been looking at the right hand side panel this morning and trying to see how the balance pipe and exhaust mounting bracket is fitted.
I am changing the standard pipes for a set of S.E. mufflers that do not have the balance pipe fitting.
So I want to remove the balance pipe (which also includes the muffler mounting bracket), and then build myself a new bracket to support the different mufflers.

Now, it looks like I will need to remove the engine side panel, and it does just look like a cover, can I just remove it without any problem, in order to see the exhaust bracket and balance pipe.

    Oh, sorry, 2004, 883XL Sportster

    Cheers

Neil you should not have to remove the engine side cover to remove any exhaust parts , I let the service manual go with my daughters bike when she sold it , but I do remember I did'nt take any parts off the engine except the exhaust

I have had a look again with better lighting, and it looks like I just need to remove the cover over the front pulley/sprocket. The bolts that hold the balance pipe/support bracket structure are bolted on behind there. When I first looked this morning I could not see how it went together, but hving a second look with an inspection lamp has shown me the way.

Really am going to have to get the proper manual, The Haynes one does not really show enough.

    Thanks

I had it away from the bike yesterday.
Couldn't get it all the way off with exhaust still in place, but moved it enough to see the bracket/balance pipe is a bolt on part and not welded to the frame.
Will do the job all at once when top end gasket kit , CVP kit and Big Sucker arrive.

Will post pics of the pipes I have some time soon, so maybe someone can ID them for me.

They are SE slipons, but do not look like any I have seen advertised anywhere. Would be nice to know what they were originally from.

I am sure I can find you some work with the new saw...I got a pile of logs the size of a small house that need cutting to length and splitting....a couple of old Series III Landrovers to cut up and a old Fordson Dexta...

A bit too late to check the p/n on the pipes this week, I have just arrived back at a hotel for work, and am here for another week. I did take a photo of them this morning before leaving for the airport.

That is what it says on them, you can just see it across the top of the top pipe

Thanks for the link, a usefull picture on there if nothing else. I had seen three bolts holding the thing on, but did wonder if there was anything else. The pic on the sale item confirms that there is just the three holes.
Easy enough just to fab one up from plate that I have in the workshop anyway. I have a load of stainless offcuts from a job last year, so that is the way to go. I was worried about what else I would find when I started taking it apart, but it looks straightforward enough.

    Thanks

    Neil
