O.k. so the old lady buys a 1999 883 hugger with about 5000 miles on it and we have a rocker box gasket leak on the front cylinder.I am hearing that this is pretty common for this bike.I bought some "jims" gaskets for it and will be doing the job ourselves. It looks pretty stright forward and we probabaly wont do the job until this winter. My question is do I put anything on the gaskets such as grease or gasket maker or anything like that?

Check torque first; could be that fasteners are not torqued to spec.

That was the problem with my shovel; front rocker box was seeping oil. Checked the torque on the nuts - they were ALL a bit under specs, some more than others. Be careful, there is a certain sequence when you tighten 'em down.

    Now he has a couple 1/4 " several 3/8 " a few 1/2" and a long 1/2" for doing the Compensating sprocket.

I have a regular torque wrench from Sears that goes up to 75 ft. lbs. It's the kind you twist the handle to get the setting you want. When I need something bigger, I have my farmer buddy Mike to borrow tools from. I always bring them back as soon as I'm done and I make sure they are clean. I also feel blessed to have a friend I can borrow tools from . . .

Got a friend, Maddog knows him to and he's got a set of pretty powerful arms on him. He would torque by hand and say, that feels like 200 pounds. Couldn't let him torque the small stuff though, got tired of drilling out the broken screws and small studs. :banghead:

When he tightens things down they don't come loose. should get him a torque wrench for Christmas. :D
