I have an 03 FLSTS. I am considering putting on slip ons with no baffles. I already had slip ons with baffles put on when I bought the bike. They had to rejet carb, etc. What are the pros and cons of running straight pipes? Am I screwing up here just to get a better sound out of my bike? Thanks for the replies.

Yes you will be screwing it up drag pipes are just that for drag racing (or looking cool) but power wise they will reduce lower end power over a properly setup exhaust.

Slip on with baffles are better and you'll just be loud without them and down on low to mid range power.

If you want to be loud at bike night go ahead but for normal riding leave them in, your bike and your riding buddies will thank you for not ripping off thier ears.

    ditto HRK!!!!

I AGREE with HRK.. there is a fella up the road from my house a ways that has drags on his fatboy....in thirty feet and three gears later I think he might be reaching the speed limit of 25 mph ;) sounds loud(almost glassy though when he hits it hard) all I think is man he is really working that engine all the heat and really not riding in the mid range where HD work great but dang he looked cool all the way up the block to the local pub  !!!
another fella I ride with has same bike as me but(02dynawg) he has alot more work done...them drags have him leaving third while I am still pulling in same gear...even tried to shift at the same tach point just to see. My current slip- on still set off car alarms and can be heard but my bike is trip ready and stays pretty cool.. hope you look around a bit more and find something other than drags..but that is just an opinion... this stuff is all fun though!!! to each there own!!!

    Drag Pipes

There is a reason that they are called drag pipes, the only place they belong is at the drags. Without any back pressure, the only time they perform is at wide open throttle. Haven't seen too many guys on the street that can keep the revs in the 4000+ range and no one will appreciate riding behind you. Besides, with all that noise you sure won't be able to sneak home late at night.

    Thanks, another question?

I want to keep the look of the fishtails on my Springer but I want to change the sound of my bike. Anybody got a recommendation of a good quality slip on that also has a deep and somewhat loud tone that I will not sacrifice power for? Thanks again for all of your replies.

    Slip Ons

There is a reason that Direct Parts is the highest selling dealer for VANCE & HINES, they are soooooo **** good! You really can't beat their performance or fit and finish. They also have a deep resonat sound that doesn't try to tear out your ear drums.

    Drag Pipes

I would also stay away from the drag pipes. CD si right, they can be a PITA to tune. I used to have a set on a used bike I bought and ended up changing them out after several attempts to get everything right. A friend of mine has a set on his 97 softail. I can't stand being behind him or to his right. It's way too loud! For some reason he likes it, or at least he used to. He's received two loud pipe tickets and a warning and is now considering changing them. I have V&H Pro Pipe on a 99 Fatboy and love them. As previously stated, they look and perform great with a nice deep sound that isn't obnoxious.

    Good luck!

    Torque Cones

Since you are on the subject of straight pipes, anybody had experience using torque cones to prevent reversion in drag or other pipes? I see them advertised and know what they are supposed to do... just wonder if they actually do it.
