I'v been thinking of putting an S&S carb on my shovelpan, I now have a bendix which needs to be rebuilt. I heard kicking it with an S&S is a sweaty job,it now starts within 4 kicks how true is it or should I just rebuild the bendix and hope that will stop the high then low idle at stops. Could it be some other problem with the carb or manifold leaking in air.

I would look for an intake leak first, that could be the problem,

Get the motor running and warmed up, then take a can of carb cleaner with the straw that comes with the can attached and spray around the intake seals a change in idle indicates a leak.

Put on new seals (If it's been several years you might want to do it anyway as they rot or deteriorate over time.)

IMHO I would skip the S&S and Bendex rebuild and pick up a cv40 from ebay off a used evo or twin cam, and put the evo intake on the shovel, you may or may not have to grind but I think an EVO intake would bolt right up size wize. Then tune the CV.

You'll get better fuel mileage it will run better and cruise better, probably start evey bit as good as your bendix you may have to relearn how to start it with a new carb, but you can pick up cv's for dirt cheap prices on ebay or swap meets. Try and find a newer take off.

The intakes are different between Shovels (rubber band or o-ring) and late models. You can use a flange to spigot adapter on a stock manifold and then a Carb support bracket and adapters for a Shovelhead. CV style push and pull cables will also be required. Then you can use a CV and any CV air cleaner.

The Bendix is nota bad carburetor and is a better choice over an S&S especially if it's a kicker.
As long as the throttle shaft is not worn out you can rebuild it cheap. They are also still readily available.

    Choices, choices, what to do:confused:

Yeah I havent spent much time on the shovels, I've heard a few have put on CV's and really liked them for the change in the way the bike runs.

I've been from Super E to Super G to Mik To G back to a cv51 and for day to day prefer the CV first the mic second and then the E, then G.
