I lost that smooth return after I shift. I have to shift then adjust lever so as to load for next gear. is this in the shift arms or a trans issue???

It could be a couple of things , rode dirt can /will get into where the shifter rod goes though shaft right behind foot shifter, balls on linkage both ends , also whens the last time trans fluied was changed ?

I would pull the shifter first toe & heel if you still have the rear one where that shaft goes through make sure it's clean then lube it , I tapped a small hole & put a grease zert in cleaned it up again put all back together 1-2 pumps from grease gun & wow shifter worked fine :D
