have a 94 fxdwg. Last year I pulled the inner primary replaced the shifter lever cause it was so worn the center hole was egg shaded and made shifting a long pull with your food sometimes. It now shifts much better but the shifter arm protruding from the transmission to which you mount the shifter lever to is so worn that you can still rotate the top of the lever more than I like. Been looking at the book and I believe I can just take top of tranny off and relace the shifter arm, maybe or maybe not have to pull inner primary again. Anyone got any ideas how this should be done?...:confused:

If you are talking about replacing the shifter shaft coming out of the trans the only way you can do it is to take the primary completely off and completely disassemble the transmission.

Get a service manual for a diagram of how it all works.

That shaft has a C clip otherwise called a Jesus Clip as in jesushchrist that almost hit my eye! once removed you slide the shaft back into the trans, you will have to have the cover off, but the gearset will block you from removing it.

That shaft is welded to the shift pawl that grabs the roller and moves it fore and aft to change gears.

Seals must be replaced and if you do this might as well replace all seals. If the splines are worn then that's what you need to do, or, pull the primary and weld the two bits together, but if the trans takes a dump you'll be cutting it off.

Thanx hotroadking, thats not what I wanted to hear but it is pretty much what I expected. The book I was reading is the official factory manual from harley, bought it when I bought the bike new. The book is well worth it, now have around 109k on this bike and it runs well but someday I fear I will shift a gear, the shifter arm will break and I won't have nothing left to get a vice grip or anything on it to enable shifting to get home

Well you could carry some vice grips LOL

Actually the worst break is the spring inside the trans
and at 109K you've shifted a ton, so replacing the whole
thing isn't a bad idea (shifter arm and paw with spring.

It's not all that difficult but it's a lot of work, so if you have the manual
and the tools pick a nice rainy weekend to get at it,

    Order the shifter shaft assembly,
    a new c-clip
new seals for the whole trans
new gaskets for primary, trans cover, trans side and trap door
qt of gear oil and primary oil,
    get all the stuff together.

The biggest issue you will have is the inner race on the main
shaft which is the inner race for the rear primary cover bearing

You can rent a puller at most autoparts stores
remove the puller and belt (it will slip over the inner race)

then use the puller to get the race off,
a little heat from a propane torch will help expand it.

Then you'll need a press to reinstall or, dump the inner race
and get a baker high tq bearing to put in the back of the inner primary
eliminates the race.. Its on the following page about half way down.

I think another company makes on of these bearings, maybe Zippers and it's less expensive. call Phil at California Phil's Concordia, KS (785) 243-9991 he'll take care of you.
