    Hello,
Does anyone know if the Early 80's Shovel Head engine serial numbers had an corolation to the VIN number of the bikes?
If so; How do you know if you have an original motor in the frame?
    thanks,
    Bryan

I have owned two 1982 shovelheads and both had engine numbers which were shortened versions of the frame numbers. It is my understanding that if the numbers do not match then the motor has been changed.Hope this helps.

It's really a long article, but here's "cut & paste" from the part that answers your question & verifies what viking said:

    1981 and later:
17 digit vin# number on frame. abbreviated vin# on engine. Title must match the Frame number. Example: title and frame number is 1HD1BDK11BY123456. Engine # would be BDKB123456.

Both will be titled as well. If you have a different motor from the frame you'll have 2 titles. Well at least in AZ.
