so...if i wanted to upgrade my ignition system, what would be the best coil, module and plug combo ??

    currently running a dyna s, with this 5 ohm coil (should this be a 3 ohm ?) 12 Volt Ignition Coil | 381-231 | J&P Cycles
and RN12YC plugs at .03 gap. i have high performance autolites, never installed yet...waiting.

Yep Dyna S uses a 5 ohm coil, that's my take on this info
V-Twin Performance - Ignitions, Coils, Wires etc..

....IMO the Dyna 2000i is the best one on the market

The Ultima ignition is a Dyna 2000i under the Ultima brand and cheaper, ignition is fine but the coil is a little suspect from what I've heard,so you could go with the Ultima and get the Dyna coil IF the Ultima coil craps out on ya....

static timing was way off. set that, then warmed it up by riding 4 miles. idled at 2000 rpm and adjusted by sound and throttle blip. way better. having reduced main jet from .068 to .064 (ss recommends .066-.068 for 74" stock) i still have what i consider unburnt fuel at the higher rpm range(cruising at 65 and going wot). at this point i am guessing that the stock plugs are not hot enough. i am going to try the autolite XP104 iridium plugs unless someone believes there is another adjustment or method to try. would regapping the stock RN12YC's from .030" to something else really make much difference ??

fyi...after 40 mile trip...center of heads 280*, exhaust port 230*, pipes 215*. front and rear +/- 5* of each other.

still wanna upgrade ignition, but that is also a winter project.

this beast is getting funner to ride every trip out...and she turns alot of heads...:D

80 mile trip with very timid operation...ran great.

is it possible that the sound i hear when trying to wot is a lack of fuel, instead of unburnt fuel ??

What kinda sound you getting??....If popping on acceleration could be too lean or intake leak,if on decel could be exhaust leak...

gots no popping accel or decel...when WOT is attempted at upper RPM range it has a real low rumble sound and speed does not come easily. i am just at the minimum jet size that is recommended. it just seems like it cannot burn all the fuel that is sent to the intake. new heads, new plugs, new wires, new coil...old module. cold or hot makes no difference.

she will pull an 8% grade in 4th gear beautifully, but again, that is in a lower RPM range.

will baby it til winter, then throw some money into the above posted ignition.

That EI should be great for your bike. I'm stubborn about my stone age points/battery ignition. Over the past few months I have finally (I think) figured out the optimal settings for everything: .028" gap on the RN12YC plugs & .018" gap on the high end points. I carry a spare plug and a spare set of points/condensor in my tool bag when on the road.:)

I've changed plug brands a few times and have gone back to the Champions. But, of course, your set up will be far better than mine with the new ignition your getting. You might want to upgrade to hotter plugs, like you said.

The Dyna S is junk. Go with the Dyna 2000i. It's cheaper if you get the Ultima version. You can set in single fire mode if you get the correct coil. The motor will start and run much smoother. Better performance too.
