Has anyone ever seen a shovelhead motor with hose barbs coming out of the heads and then the hoses connected to the oil pump?
I'm assuming this is for by-pass gas venting. My bike has these hoses and they are now connected to the crankcase where the timing plug goes.

The crank case has one of those also. They are all connected. The gas vents from the heads down to the crankcase and the out to atmoshere.
The engine was 103 ci with the jugs notched out at the bottom where they sit on the crankcase. No base gasket! It was a very tricked out set-up. It had about 105HP. I had to decrease the compression by putting on smaller jugs and pistons. It was too hard to start the engine. The rest of the compnents were not design for that much compression and they would systematically fail. Starter, relay, batter, solenoid, wiring, switches. All were failing on me. Not she is at 93 ci and has no issues at all. Runs great with 4 plugs, 2 coils and a dyna 20001 ignition running in single fire mode. I highly reccomend single fire mode if you can figure out how to make it work!

Tommyc, I've been told to use single fire stuff, too, but I'm really into old school. I understand points, condenser, double fire coil, butterfly carb, etc. I have a CV carb, but if the older one works, hey, why change it? It was good enough back in the day. I have noticed that a lot of guys like to have lots of extra power and spend lots of money trying to get it. I figure if my scoot can pull my skinny ass up a steep hill or cruise at 70 all day, that's enough power for me!

I thought those lines from the oil pump to the head were oil feeds to the rocker shafts and arms. Stock were solid lines.

I know it's an old post, but I think the dudes talking about
"external oil drains" - common on big shovels, where you dump the oil returning from the rockers right into the gearcase. Im set up that way.

Yes TNJSLC, that's what they are. Mine are set-up to return to the oil pump.
Why are external oil lines used? Is there a problem with the internal oil drains on a bore larger than 3 5/8"?

Hey there Tommy. Not really any problems on 3 5/8 cyls, the main reason for external oil returns are a slight horsepower gain - dumping the oil into the gearcase instead of on the flywheels prevents windage & wet sumping - frictional HP losses.
Horsepower gains -if you do alot of little **** the right way you gain HP because it all adds up.

What do you mean by into the gearcase? Do you mean back to the oil pump?
Is that a Nitrious bottle I see on your bike? How does it work on a shovel? My motor was 103ci, I put smaller jugs on to bring it down to 93ci. It was too hard to start that bad boy.
I have been thinking about putting Nitrious on my bike.

Do you think the 2 into 1 header works better than drag pipes?
