Slow response on tach

    On my 1997 injected Road King I recently changed my stock speedo. for a speedo/tach. The tach seems to be slow to respond if you give the throttle a quick twist in neutral. I seem to recall someone telling me about some kind of signal booster for a tach. Anyone ever come across this problem?

    maybe a bad tach? is it new? HD puts out some pretty chitty aftermarket electronics anymore.:devil:

    Does the speedo respond as soon as you start rolling? I put the same speedo/tach on my 02' Heritage and it works great. One thing to check is the pin conector on the plug. You have make sure that you get the new barrel connector iinserted all the way into the plug housing. It should lock in place if installed correctly, and you should be able to see the end of it when you look at the end of the plug.

    Remove the plug from the speedo and look in the end of it. You should be able to see the end of the connector, if you can't, it is not all the way in, and when you plug it into the speedo the mating pin in the speedo will push the barrel connector back into the plug. This will cause a weak circuit connetion and affect the operation of the gauge. If everything is connected properly and it still doesn't work correctly, then take the gauge back to HD for replacement. I do know of a couple of these that were returned for defects.

    Hey guys, Thanks for the replies. The spedo does come off the peg as soon as I roll. I did send for a new one and double cheched them damned little pins when I installed it. It's much better, but still a little slow wetween idle and 2000 but after that it seems to follow engine speed pretty good. It seems to hit 5400 just as the rev limiter pops. Maybe I just expected too much. This the first Harley I ever put a tach on and I probably stare at it more since it's new to me. Oh well!! I've ridden 40+ years without one I'll learn to live with it or put the old one back on.
