Smart meters

    Not only what he said, but "Smart Meters" can regulate your power usage. If, during a time of high demand, the utility company decides that you don't need to run your air conditioner because your patterns say you are not home at this time, the "Smart Meter" can cut back on the power delivered to regulate the overall demand. It does not know that you are home sicker than hell that day, or that you are on a "stay-cation". What it cannot do is turn off your air conditioner. All it can do is scale back the power you receive. What they don't tell you is that by scaling back on the amount of power you receive, they are damaging your equipment. Electrical equipment does not run well on reduced power and running very long on reduced power will significantly shorten the life of your equipment is not cause outright failure.

    Instead of upgrading the power grid to handle the demands, the utility companies have come up with this way to regulate your usage and reduce the demands.
