I have installed Vance and Hines Short Shot Pipes on my 2006 Harley XL1200 Low (Sportster) and have the CV Preformance Carb Kit and an Arlen Ness SS Big Sucker intake to install this weekend. Someone today told me that I MUST have a new computer and get the bike Dyno at Harley to the tune of $900-1200. I have never had anyone tell me I must have this stuff done before. I have a buddy who is very smart at engines and motorcycles but not as familiar with Harley's install the stuff so I figure I may get a better awnser here. Do I NEED to have the dyno and computer done and if so do I need harley to do it? I was just planning on installing the carb kit with appropriate jets for stage 1 mods and the air intake and then using the mixure knob to find the right balance of fuel and air. Thanks!

You don't need to get the bike dyno tuned or mess with the ignition, especially on a carbureted bike. Of course if you move up to cams and seek even higher performance a dyno tune can certainly help, but not entirely necessary. Fuel injected bikes often need a dyno since there is nothing tangible to adjust (no mixture screw, jetting, etc).

Agree with Ken, drop in the kit
use the instructions for proper setup of the screw
and that will help you set the pilot jet

Main jet from HD was not EPA restricted and is generally more
than enough for your fuel on a stage 1 (Filter and pipes) bike.

You may need to go up one size on the pilot jet.

Dyno tunes are not $900, if they are I'm leasing a dyno and
going in business, couple hundred dynos a year = $200K... not bad..
