Was wondering if there's a way to get inside the speedo I have so I can run a new wire to see the thing at night. I know these things are made so you can't tamper with them, but I'm thinking there must be some way to get around that. Any ideas short of buying a new speedo? Here's a couple of pictures of it. 20140923_4 (640x480).jpg 20140923_3 (640x480).jpg

So this wasn't lit to begin with right?

Might be difficult just to come up with a place for a light
that cover is press fit and you'll need a gauge repair shop
    to do what olbill said.

Might be better just to save up some bucks get a lit one
from Jay Pee and sell that one to Tatman or someone...

I'll get in touch with instrument sales & service in Portland. Thanks Olbill. HRK, the speedo has a light inside. The wire is missing.

Did you pull the little rubber plug out and have a look???...might be able to solder a new wire to the light socket...

OK I get it, I'd bet the rubber plug will give you access.

20140924_5.JPG Just took it off and the mini LED bulb came out with it. Removed the connectors and got the stubs of the old wires off and crimped/soldered new wires on. Pulled the new wires and connectors throught the plug and walla!

Just have to get some shrink wrap and run the wires to power source and ground. Hey now !

That special tool does work very well for many applications . But this time I resorted to a little finesse thanks to Lucifer's idea.

The wire looked broken off flush with the plug...I wasn't sure if you had enough wire to splice...

It was actually two wires. It works now, but I am disappointed with the way it lights up. It was dark out when I finished all the routing last night. Turned off all the lights and hit the switch and I can barely see the readout on the speedo. Very dim. But it is serviceable.
Probably not a very well designed speedo. I'm thinking the teeny LED bulb was an afterthought.

I believe it's an LED. Doesn't screw in - it slides into the rubber socket between two connectors. I'd consider an upgrade but don't know which way to go. Would have to be a "mini" speedo, 1:1 ratio, that lights up really well at night.

I'm guessing it's not an LED or it would be brighter.
