my speedometer isn't reading the correct speed. It does work but it's like i have huge tires. for example if i'm going about 70mph it reads 45 mph etc. it is an electric speedometer (not digital) I need to know what part to buy since it isn't a matter of just cleaning up a cable.

Sounds to be a speed sensor.

What year is it? If it is indeed electric, then it has the sensor on the tranny like Jim sez.

If it is mechanical, the cable can be dry and needs lube. With light oil NOT a Moly type as it dries out and makes it worse. Could also be the drive unit flaking out. Usually a bad or dry cable shows up as motion in the cable housing and erratic readings...A bad speedo usually is right then wrong then wobbly etc.

If you have an electronic speedo the sensor is probably covered with shavings and needs to be cleaned. Remove it, wipe it off and hit it with some carb cleaner and reinstall. BTW, those nice metal flakes are telling you that it is time to do a hot tranny juice change.

OOP's just noticed it is a '99...if it is an H-D and stock it is electric. If it is a custom, all of the above still applies.

I Had Problems With My Speedo 2 Weeks Off The Lot. They Told Me That When You Shut Down The Bike Without Useing The Off Switch It Will Cause This. Mine Is Dig And Needle. It Still Happens On Ocasion. So I Just Stop And Restart The Bike Useing The On Off Switch.
