I've got a 2006 Wild West Dragoon and the speedo stopped working last night. It isn't registering speed or mileage however the needle will jump around from time to time. I'm assuming it might be a loose connection or if a relay went bad (if there is even one) or where it would be located.

Where does it connect on the bike? Is there a relay? Possibly loose wire...HELP!!

I am assuming that this is a digital speedo? If it isn't, I would think that the speedo cable is loose at the trans. Just a thought, not sure on the electronic ones even though my bike is an electronic one.

it is a digital mileage counter but speedo is not. The mileage shows but its not tacking on any more miles as I ride nor how fast I am going. The back light works fine as well

I wish I knew. It's all Performance Machined mechanicals but I don't know if its safe to assume that its their speedo. Where does the wire hook up to on the tranny? Maybe I will start there and see if its loose or broken

Do your turn signals auto cancel? If they normally do but do not cancel now it would look to the sensor on the trans

Pull out and clean. It might be gummed up it's a magnet based sensor and can pick up a lot of shavings

If not then the sensor might be bad I would start there

The auto shut off is still working properly. Since this post the other gremlin that came about was the negative battery post melting (see other thread), so I'm assuming that they are in conjunction with one another somehow. Thanks everyone for your input. I gotta figure out whats melting my battery post

Did you have a starter run on, that will draw big power and can melt the battery terminal.

Typically it's a loose connection at the terminal at the battery as indicated before.

I would pull the battery and inspect the ground and positive wires, one may have cut through on a sharp edge on the frame in some area,

It could be grounding power directly to the frame and causing issues
    with all the electronics.

I just got done looking at the bike and I found a wear thru in the insulation on the wire that goes from the solenoid to the starter (red wire). Looks like it wore thru over a period of time. However, there is no evidence of arching on the wire or any burn mark what so ever. It does make some sense that this might be the issue because I did wipe down the bike yesterday between when it was working fine to when the problem occured and I do specifically remember wiping under that wire. I'm assuming that when the wire is positioned just right, it arcs and draws too much from the battery. It also might explain that the terminal melt down only happens when I go to start the motor and not when the key is turned on.

Your thoughts? Would that cause the issue?

yes it's sending power through the frame

Replace the wire, and get some wire wrap
the plastic hard stuff to keep it from rubbing there.

Battery might be toast as well, take it up have it tested
