    Greetings,

I'm not sure if this is the right location for this question, but here it goes:

I have a 1997 Sportster 883. The other day I hit the throttle hard and noticed the speedometer needle jumping all over...roughly 20-30 mph range while accelerating. As soon as I leveled off the speed, the needle stopped jumping erratically. Any idea what would cause this?

cable driven speedo??? electronic???? if cable, lube the cable and the "driver" at the front wheel. if electronic, pull the sender, clean it off and reinstall.....hope this helps....

well, this is just the factory speedo, so I think it is electronic. Thanks for the info.

Haven't gotten to it yet. Maybe this weekend....

Never owned a Harley before, so I'm not sure where it is.

I'll have to dig out the service manual.

That's a good idea, not sure on sporty but on the big twins its on the top of the trans held in by a single allen, it has an o-ring so remove allen and work the sensor out, wipe with paper towel and reinsert, then pull back out and reclean it will probably pull out more stuff.
