97 Sportster 883 with SE intake and slip-on mufflers.

Just finished installing the premium tuners kit, max fuel inlet, and v-ductor. Bike is running great, better than it ever has since I purchased it 8 years ago. The first question I have is that the previous owner drilled out the vacuum port on the slide to 1/8", I put the carb back together with this slide and it seems to be running fine, is it worth dropping $50 to replace the slide? Second question, if I snap the throttle at idle i get a momentary rich condition, I assume this is normal but I just want to be sure.

    Thanks,
    Kyle Babuska

Do you mean it stumbles when you snap the throttle??Could be the 1/8" hole in the slide causing it...slide jumps/raises too quick...If it only does it at idle and you can live with it,you can keep the slide...but there shouldn't be a stumble, hesitation or fart when you snap the throttle if the engine is up to normal operating temps and jetted right...

Thanks for the response Lucifer. There is no stumble, hesitation, or cough anymore just a little bit of smoke out the exhaust and you can smell unburnt fuel when you snap the throttle off idle. I was wondering if this was due to the accelerator pump being to large for the 883's or if it could be the slide moving to quickly being drilled out with the lighter CVP spring.

It is possible that the slide is opening too fast and under the correct condition introducing too much fuel combined with the accelerator pump spray at the same moment. Tuning back on the mixture screw may help. If you are unable to trim back the mixture screw enough to avoid the overly rich condition without leaning out then I recommend replacing the slide.

Thanks Ken. I'll fiddle with the mixture screw some more and if that doesn't do it I'll try a new slide.
