Hey guy's I know I haven't droped a line in a while.A buddy of mine has a sportster and it stoped shifting.the clutch seems to be adjusted.it goes into some gears.I rode it seemed to shift up but wouldn't down shift.my guess would be shifting pawl. The only thing I haven't a clue being it's a sportster could anybody have an answer and also send me schematic of the inside of this animal to give me an idea what i'm looking for.........Thanks strickt9Rob

PS......My Heritage is getting an open drag primary soon.Pics to follow.

it shifted up ok, but wouldn't down shift? acted like it was hung between gears?there was spring in the shifting lever so either way you moved it ,it would return.but wouldn't go into gear I had to bring it back in forth gear when I road tested it.

yes thats what it was doing?I don't know sportsters. So I'm with out a clue.Is there a barrel and shifting pawl like the FL's have?If there is one of the pawls fiingers must have broke. I was sort of hoping for an easy fix.but it doesn't seem likely.

    That's possible

Don't know the sporty setup on the clutch but on the big twins you have a throwout bearing on the end of one of the clutch adjustment pushrods, under the tranny cover.

What you describe also sounds a lot like a big twin when it looses the throw out bearing.

I'd say you're going hunting for broken bits.

had the fork shifting mechinisim do hicky thing a ma gig break on my 89, sounds like the same issue, probably the same thing as a throw out bering on the big twin, if so it's a easy fix and about a 3 dollar part, but you have to pull the hole tranny out. when I pulled mine I took it to the indy shop and took them a hole 5 minutes to fix it. the primary gasket is what will cost the most

the clutch seems fine the way it feels the adjustment at the lever you can feel it ingage and disingage.the bike doesn't want to go in all the gears it seems to go in and out of fourth gear when I got it back to the house.I really don't think it's the clutch though?? How's HRK doing any way I was hoping you were around.SPORTSTERBOY you had simular problem.and you had to pull gear cluster? to change it out. does not sound good.

As far as false neutrals, I get those on my sporty as well. Mine tends to do it when down shifting between 5th and 4th. Mine started doing it after I went with the HD synth. The site Synthetic Oil is a test where the tester experienced the same problem with the false nuetrals. The Amsoil supposedly took care of that. I am preparing to try it in mine when I get home in a few weeks. I will let you know how it works.

Well pulled pimary on the sporty.the shifting pawl was fine, but there's a little star shaped flat metal with small rods on the back side that the dogs on the pawl push and pull on just like a miniture barrel.Cheap ass! retaining clip holding the whole deal together, broke and let it fall apart. 3hrs. $45 in parts and gasketts and 6pack of heineken all is well. Plus got to explore the sporty. HRK and all who answered Thanks..strrickt9rob
