A young GI bought a used Sporty with an S&S carb, I am trying to help him with some parts I have laying around. Is the CV intake manifold the same as the manifold on a 80inch Evo with CV carb?

    Nope.

And unless some kind of adapter was used, the S&S carb will not fit a stock Sportster intake manifold for a CV carb. I've got one Sportster engine with an S&S, the others with CV's & while the manifold shape is the same (will not fit a BT), the way the carb mounts is not.

Be helpful to know what year & model the Sportster is, as an S&S carb is a popular replacement for Ironheads (1957-1985), but not so much for Evo's (1986-2003) or "Boneheads" (2004-present).

I bought a 94 Sportster with a S&S carb on it and it puked black smoke. After changing jets, adjusting idle mixture I was still unhappy with it. From recommendations from here I bought a stock CV carb and tried to mount it on the S&S intake. I fabricated a flange mount to press on the carb but when I went to mount it the carb wouldn't line up in the tight space intended for it. It put my throttle linkage right into the head. The intake needed to be angled up about 1/2" higher so instead of more fabricating I broke down and bought a stock intake and now have a pretty good running bike.

Thanks for the input and info, the kid decided to keep the S&S on his bike, he likes the air cleaner cover.

The Super E is a bit large for an 883, maybe even a 1200 unless properly tuned

Go to S&S Cycle - Performance Parts for American V-Twins and download the technical manual for him in pdf and print it out, shows the tuning steps to get it spot on (provided you think it needs tuning)

It's a great carb, and typically tuned WAY TOO rich in all applications. So they end up getting crappy fuel mileage but it's because they are not properly tuned.

I run one size up G on my 124, E's can handle much larger engines than the sporty, So just make sure it's tuned right and he'll have a fund and kool looking ride.
