got a friend with a springer softtail with 51,000 miles and claims when he lets go to zip his sleeves that it is now starting to "wobble a bit" as he says. Wants me to fix it for him but I have never played with one of these. Am curious about this , but what needs to be done. Thinking there is bushings that need replacing with that many miles but don't know.

The springer s will get more squashy with the more mileage that gets put on them. There is a shock that does go on the front end on the springer. That could need replacing. Could you be a little more specific with the wobble? Is it at higher speeds or what? It could be something as simple as the wheel is out of balance? Did he replace the tire recently? Could be that the tire was put on wrong.

BTW, was your trip to Sturgis??

first thing i would check is the tension on the spokes, both front and rear. then check the "fall away" of the front end as described in the service manual. then lift the front end to check bushings, ect.. i believe you will find the problem before ya get to the front end...it doesnt have that many miles on it. i hope he did regular maintainence on it.....greasing all the zerks on it???????? springers arent rockets........simple front ends really......

;)I agree with chuck check spoke tension ! very common to cause a wobble and if it was the springer front end it would happen with your hands on the bar as well. fall away is very simple to check and adjust as well . it is also covred in the manual . greese those . neck bearings before you adjust if it has not been done in a long period. before you adjust . bearing pre load maybe just fine and may drag and give false reading if to dry !
