I recieved a stage 1 kit for my 1200 sportster for christmas. I was installing it yesterday, but I am to a point where I don't know what to do. The only instructions I received were for the E-Z just screw. I installed it with no problems. I did not receive any different jets either, so do I just keep the stock jetting or do I order more jets. They were #42 & #170. Also about the slide needle. The name would imply that it would have something to do with the slide, but where and how do I install it? Any help would be appreciated.

orange fan - first things first! do you have a shop manual for your bike? If so check out the section on carbs. The slide is removed by taking off the the plate on top of the carb, careful when you do it cause there is a spring under it that likes to fly! the slide is under the spring and in the center of that is the needle. If you turn the slide upside down it should drop out in your hand. On the bottom of the carb is the bowl and you'll have to remove it to gain acess to the jet. Use care when removing it and don't use a undersize screwdriver or you'll most likely gouge out some brass and ruin the jet. On the bottom of the jet is the size # if it's 170 leave it alone cause you already got the same size in the kit.
The idle jet is located under the little lead plug on the left side of the carb(toward the back of the bike). Carefully remove it and you will see the #42 (slow) jet. If it not a 42 then replace it with the jet from the kit.
If you have any questions PM chucktx - he's in the trade and knows carbs well, also check out the performace forum at the bottom of the home page for some more guidance; I don't know which kit ya got but if you check out that area you shouldn't have to much trouble.
Once again - if you don't have a harley shop manual go out and get one; they aren't cheap but the money you spend will one of the best investments you ever put in your ride.
Hope this helps and if you have anymore ?'s PM me and I'll try to walk you through it. Enjoy the ride and welcome to BT

Thanks Sarge7. I do have a shop manual. I was using it to help me out. Which jet is the cause of the backfires out of the carb.? I can't wait to get this kit installed because it takes a long time to warm up and unless it is 90 degrees outside it backfires alot. (not fun at red lights).

orange fan - while your at it and have the carb off - you might want to put a V-Ductor in there. Makes for a cheap upgrade with good results. Check the reviews in the post on it, and the comments made by those who have tryed it. It's worth the money and will pay for itself many times over not to mention what it does for your ride.

Finally got to finish stage 1 kit installation today. Have been very sick since Tuesday, but I couldn't take it any more and had to get back out into the garage. All I can say is WOW. The bike started up alot quicker and warmed up so much faster than ever. I was able to take it off choke much sooner. The throttle response was much better too. That is saying alot because the bike has always struggled in cold weather. It was 40 degrees in the garage (and falling with the door open) and it ran great. I was not able to take it for a ride.(I'm still pretty ill), but I have great confidence it will perform much better than ever. Thanks Ken!

Great idea Sarge, but it will have to wait for now. I will check out the reviews on the V-ductor. It should be a pretty easy install.
