Hi all, when starting my FX shovelhead the starter sometimes makes a vvvrrrrrrrrring noise and does not engage. after a few tries it will finally engage and start the motor.
I think the problem the starter clutch gear that engages the ring gear on the clutch basket.
I think this a pretty common problem. Anybody know what I'm talking about? How do I unscrew the nut that holds the gear into the starter shaft without it turning?
What's the trick to loosen the bolt that holds it onto the shaft?
Do I need to pull the starter or just open the primary cover?
    Thanks guys.

Is there a nut on the front of the ring gear as well as in back of it?? I would think that it would kind of like taking a fan off of a water pump. have to turn opposite ways. Just a thought.

if there is a nut, you should be able to jam a piece of wood against the gear and housing.....not that tight..

I can figure it out from here, thanks Chuck~!
It's funny to me the way Harley's can be worked on.. "Just jam a piece of wood behind it."
    That makes me laugh.
    thanks again Chuck~!

something to chew on...........remove the whole starter, then ya can check for any worn parts that may strand you next week. clean and paint it, then put it back with confidence that it will not give any problems for a long time...........

    Excellent idear~! Thanks again Chuck.
    I just might do that.
I put on new trip trees 2 weeks ago and last weekend I put in a new ignition switch and circuit breakers. I just bought the bike and it needed a little TLC. The last to do is new starter clutch and fix the gas tank that is dented.
I really appreciate the help you all give me.
BYE, attached is a pic of my new baby.
She's for sale if anyone is interested. $5,500.

I agree...take it off, give it the once over...not something you want to get into every couple of weeks.

Sure is a sweet looking shovel.
