I think my drive gear may going bad.
The bike starts right up but gives a binding sound when starter is engaged. Sounds like the starter gear assembly is binding up against the ring gear.
I have tried everything, realigning the starter housing, 2 primary cover gaskets, no primary cover gasket, 1, 2 and no jackshaft shims.
    Still getting the binding sound.
Any else got an idea of what it might be besides the gear?

Tommy, try the ShovelheadUSA forum. I can usually get answers there specific to the ol' shovel.

It was the starter drive gear as I suspected. Replaced it and now she starts fine.
    Thanks.
