my 01 fatboy had been sitting for a couple of weeks, when i went to start it , the motor turned over slowly, i charged the battery and tried to start the bike , but this time all i am getting is whinning noise from the starter just spinning, it appears that the pinnion gear is not extending far enough to contact the ring gear.all cables are in excellent condition and tight.tried jumping but got the same result. can my selenoid go bad suddenly, i pulled the back cover off and the contacts looks good. any sugestions before i remove the oil tank and primary cover prematurely, i do have a s.e big bore stage 2 kit with s.e 203 cams, and the starter does misengage and kicks back after a hard ride sometimes. appreciate any help thanks.

sounds like a starter clutch. You have to remove the starter and take it apart to replace the clutch.

Check battery it could be charging but not holding a charge, you need to get a load test done on it to see if it's still holding the charge.

If not the starter won't engage I'd pull the battery and go to a parts store, dealer etc and have them do a load test first before I pulled parts.
