Starter problems HELP

    My stsrter on my 99' fatboy went out and I installed a new starter this past weekend. Not an easy task. The bike started great for the first 2 days but now sounds like gears grinding. I am assuming since I haven't taken it back apart yet that the coupling has sliped out just enough that the jackshaft is not in the coupling enough to turn the engine over. My questions are 1> does this sound like it could be the issue? and 2> what holds the coupling in place while the starter is ingaged? The only thing I see that keeps it in place is the spring.

    Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.

    your going to have to pull the starter again. check the spring, they do break, and for no apparent reason!!!:witsend: also make sure the fork is working freeley, and not binding up...........:)

    Follow up

    Turns out that every tooth but 3 were chewed completely off off the pinion gear. I replaced it and everything seems to be fine for now. But as I said earlier, it started firne for 2 days before. Keeping my fingers crossed!

    Did you clean everthing up super good ? you don't want those real small spects getting into it & messing it up again

    Yeah, I hope I cleaned it good enough. Going to drain the primary one more time just to be safe.

    you dont say if you found the cause for the loss of teeth.......dont need that happening again......in the middle of nowhere!!!!!!!
    there was a reason the teeth were gone, that is not a normal problem!!!!:)

    I would pull the primary off & double check the all the interns there & the bearing for the starter shaft , along with a good spray cleaner

    Wow! That link explains alot. The first time my starter failed last year was due to kick back. after having the starter rebuilt it lasted a year and failed agian. I assumed it was the starter so I bought a new one. Then this issue happened. Thank you for that link I am a little wiser now about what happened and what to do.

    If I take it back apart and use a good spray cleaner, is there a risk of damage to the clutch pack? I would hate to cause yet another problem while trying to clean up the original problem.

    i don't recommend brake clean on clutch pacs but thats me I usually use starting fluid (ethier) for cleaning them then wet it again on assymbly with what ever your running it in, now on dry brakes and rotoors brake clean is fine JMO
