Hi guys, did a complete carb rebuild with CVP parts and the bike runs better than ever, the one issue I have is starting from cold, on full choke the bike fires but stops this goes on for maybe 7 or 8 times until finally it runs ok. It sounds like a fuel problem but once the bike has warmed up I can knock the choke off and it ticks over sweetly at sub 500 rpm. The choke is working, if I pull the choke back on when the bike is warmed up the revs increase. There are no back-fires or coughs when I am riding and I changed the petcock to run without vacuum. Any ideas ??

Try setting your idle higher. Mine idles around 1000 rpm.

Ripper is spot on. Harleys should idle at about 1000 to 1100 rpm.

I'll give it a whirl, I just like the sound of a slow tickover.....

I upped the tickover to 1000rpm but the starting was not much better, maybe 5 or 6 fires before it continued and ran. I will experiment with turning the fuel on earlier and maybe leaving the choke fully on (engine stopped) when I have finished riding.
I am also wondering whether there is an air leak on something like the inlet manifold to carb rubber seal ?

Shouldn't have to do either of those...quite possible you have a vacuum leak..
Here's how to test for an air leak

I don't like the tickover at 1,000rpm so it's back down to 600, the oil pressure is fine, the 'Glide has an oil pressure gauge. The good news is the bike is now starting at the first attempt - fuel on, full choke then five twists of the throttle. I suspect there may have been a partial blockage in the carb accelerator pump fuel way. It's great being able to stop at junctions or in traffic without the bike cuting out or needing to rev the bollocks off it !!

Good. I would bump idle rpm up just to be safe 800 at minimum

I am having a problem with my 01 softail but my mine will only start and run with chock all the way out.when i push the choke in at all the engine dies It will rev for about thirty seconds with choke only. Does this sound like a diaphragm problem with vacuum shutter or clogged jets any ideas I'm not sure what the next step to check

I'd be worried a sub 900rpm idle is too low to properly lubricate the valvetrain. Oil pressure at the sender down low might be barely ok, but starved at top. Get that oil pump turning!
