Hey guys, I am trying to stop a leak on my 79 flh tranny. I have replaced the main drive gear spacer oil seal, but I still have a small leak behind the inner primary.:gah:I have the service manual but not the pm(have it on order)on page 7-26 of sm it shows a oil seal(14) on the mainshaft. Could this be the problem? Anybody have any other ideas before I take it apart again, and again and again. I know one of you genius's will be able to help. dealer said 2 weeks before pm will be in.I really don't want to wait that long, and I think I can fix it without it. Thanks

It is tranny fluid for sure, I thought that main seal would keep the fluid from leaking out of the tranny? That little seal goes on the mainshaft after the main seal so if that one leaked would'nt it leak into the primary? this leak is between the trans and inner primary.:gah:

Is there an oring on the back of the spacer, that might cause it if you think the seal is alright

There are a couple of seals at least on the evo trans and twin cams,

there is a seal and an o-ring (it's called the quad seal) around the mainshaft, both should be replaced together

Also you have a seal around the shifter arm, it's best to replace it at the same time, age and wear and the fact that it's a friggin PIA to get back there...

I also replace the main shaft seal in the back of the primary and the starter jackshaft seal.

Otherwise you're pulling it all apart again

Do you have an inner race on the mainshaft, if so that has to come off the get the seal off and on, a steering wheel puller might work, if it's stubborn, heat it a bit with a torch

Also mark where it sits on the mainshaft so you get it back in the right spot.

I am heading to the garage and open it backup. I will check all things you guy's have suggested. I'm sure I'll find where it's comin from :witsend: I really appreciate all the advice I get from this site. My best bud was my local help,He new his stuff about all the older bikes (pans, shovels, evo's) But has passed on to the great poker run in the sky about 2 years back:mad:So I'm hopin with online help I can keep ridin my old shovel (he always told me to stick with the old one).:)

before you rip stuff apart, get under it with a flashlight, and a mirror

I find shining the light on the mirror held at an angle I can see on the mirror more stuff than looking up, the reflected light hits a lot.

You could get some good cleaner up there, wash and dry it good then ride it and check for the leak to be sure.

    Oil moves around a lot....

:D HRK the leak is fixed :) It was the small o-ring on the mainshaft. Took awhile to figure it out because the old one was almost completely gone. Thanks to all who gave thier advice to this problem.:) You know who you are.
