If I put a belt drive on a stock HD 4 speed can I run the stock clutch dry or does it need to be run in primary fluid? Will I need to put on a different clutch?
Is the primary fluid there to lube the primary chain only?
    Any info is appreciated.
    As always, thank you Gentlemen.

Would an '83 FXE have a dry clutch even tho the primary chain is lubbed? or that considered a wet clutch?

If the clutch basket is IN the primary, it is exposed to the primary oil! Therefore, it's a "wet" clutch.

Does the clutch basket have a shroud around it?(I may be wrong, I'll check it out tomorrow when I go up my buddies)
The primary chain is lubed by an oil feeder off the pump and the clutch basket has a shroud around it to keep the oil from splashing on the clutch to keep it dry...a lot of guys took the feeder line out, plugged the inner primary where the line went in and just dumped a cup of oil in to lube the chain,so I'm thinking they ran a dry clutch....My bud put a set of Alto Reds plates in it for the previous owner and they can be run wet or dry...(I'll check before the beer starts flowing too freely)...:D

:roflmao: can ya find a you tube video on Alto clutch plate install on a Shovel??:roflmao:

I did a little internet search and found that Harley went with a wet diaphragm clutch mid year in 1984(Last of Shovels, first of Evo's)...The Shovels primary previously had an oil feed and drain from the engine to lube the chain and a cover around the basket to keep the clutch dry....My memory also came back for a minute:rolleyes: and the reason my buddy changed clutch plates was because he put oil in like an Evo and his clutch was slipping really bad because the plates got soaked with oil:(

Chuck, does your Pan run a dry clutch??

Belt drives don't leak oil in your nice brick paver driveway. It's gonna be an enclosed belt drive, no problem with keeping clean, 1 1/2" belt. They run good.
    Thanks for the info guys.

If'n you have one that leaks, git a James Gasket and put on the primary.
Or replace the inner and outter primary's
If you have a Old bike that has a chain on back its doing its job lub the chain.

    All shovels leak, don't they?
Only way to stop the primary leak fer sure is to put on a belt.
I've done it before, it stopped the primary leak but then I found a leak coming from the pulley shaft. I think the seal in the motor case is leaking. Is there a way to seal it up?
I read in the optima manual for shovels when installing a belt to seal around the shaft behind the stator and in the splines with sealant.
    Anyone else ever done this?
