Just bought a 2008 FLHTCU, bone-stock. I’ve never had a fuel injected Harley before, so ignorant me finds a set of true duals pretty cheap and snatched them up (Samson Calibers) without knowing anything about remapping or fuel management. I have always changed the stock Harley exhausts on my previous bikes, and only had to re-jet the carbs. I have not installed them yet
My question is this. I was told by a friend that I could install a Power Commander and it would “auto tune” to account for the change in pipes, and I wouldn’t have to take it in for dyno and tune. Is this true? Is this a pretty straight forward modification to do (remember, I’m an idiot with fuel injection!)? Any information and suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!
Also, I’ve been told that eliminating the stock crossover pipe is bad for performance, and yet all the pipe manufacturers claim up to 20% more torque/power with true duals……any comments?
By the way, I already have a custom screamer, so I'm not looking to do anything to this one other than get a little better low end. I'd like to get rid of the crossover to make the heat manageable, and finally, a little more sound would be good!!!:D

    1) You can change the mufflers but not the headers and mufflers on your new bike as long as you leave the stock air box on. It will compensate for the mufflers (notice do not install headers)

    2) If you are changing to true duals, you can get a good power increase by changing the air filter box to a Ness Big Sucker, skip the HD SE unit, it's a paper filter and that is so you come back to HD to buy new filters, the Ness is K&N type washable.

    3) Powercommander 5 has the ability to do what your friend suggests, only if you add the auto tune option to connect and sense from the 02 sensor. You will still need to load a good base map to start from, and you can get some from powercommanders web site, but, they usually are no where near close to what you want.

As an alternative, the people that developed the original HD SERT (Screaming Eagle Race Tuner) now have the software available outside HD as HD changed vendors and went with the SUper Tuner which most feel is less of a product than the Original SERT.

    go to http://www.mastertune.net/

Order the Mastertune or you can order it from Jenny at Tri-County HD in Fairfield Ohio for 20% off using the Kuryakyn part number from the Kuryakyn book.

This allows you to access the Harley ECM and change settings, see codes, and lay out a custom map for the bike. You would be simply doing a stage 1 upgrade filter and true duals. TTS also has the 02 sensor sensing auto tune feature, Steve Cole is the dude to speak with at TTS. JMO the TTS is the ability to massage and operate the ECM, and IMO is better than a powercommander as it's not a "bolt on" part or addition that you have to deal with.

Then again, you can't take the tts mastertune with you when you sell the bike, only downside is it marries the software to the ECM... Just like the SERT.

I can understand that because you can only run the powercommander on one bike at a time, but if the software was fully open you could give it away and destroy the development of a great product.

BTW based on the manufacturers claims about all the bolt on performance parts I have now on the bike I am approaching 120,000 horsepower and will be launching a satellite for the Chinese next time I leave the lights.....

Laughing my ass off! I'm with you Brother!

Since I already bought the true duals, I'll probably use them and do the Stage 1 deal (hope I'm not screwing up by removing the crossover). I'll go with the Ness Big Sucker because it's close to the K&N (that's on the old Evo, and has 5 years on it...still looks ALMOST new!).
Not sure what I'll do about the other electronics....you've given me some things to think about, and I sure appreciate the info!

No problem, With either the Powercommander or the TTS Mastertune you control your own destiny for programming

With the HD Super Tuner you are stuck with dealers that have dynos in order to make money, they will load the map that is "close" but most have no tuner on staff. (Not all like Latus HD in Oregon) are power junkie dealers

    Think Yenko vs, Jones Chevy

With the PC 5 you can start without auto tune but JMO I'd pop for it you want it tuning the best it can...

Stay away from the dial a pot fueler tuners, they have a place but in the long run, if you decide on cams (you will, because we'll talk you into it, or going 103, or head work etc, you'll want the extra capabilities of the TTS or the PC5

I had the link to TTS wrong

    Again, thanks!
I want to keep this big piggy simple. More pop in the bottom end and a little louder music out the pipes is all I'm looking for.

Call Jamie at Fuel Moto and git the PCV from him.
He also sells the A/N high flow air kit.
He can load a basic map for what yer setup on the bike is.

I got the PCV on my bike from him.

P.S. the crossover pipe is for bottom end torque.
