Today while going stir crazy again, I was watching the "History" channel. There was a very interesting show on "Modern Marvels" called "World-shaking Crashes". It was about the study of vehicle crashes from race cars to sky divers including a good emphasis on motorcycles. A company called ExPonent studies crashes and possible ways of making people safer. Their studies led to the Goldwing airbag. They played video of it and man it really works on front end crashes which are far and away the most prevalent of biker crashes. The one statistic that got me was this; approximately half of all licensed bikers are over 40 years old. AND approximately half of all biker fatalities are over 40 years old. So there goes the myth that the young dudes are the major fatalities on bikes.

Over 90% of all statistics quoted are incorrect, the other half is just made up...

No surprise, just go to any big rally and it is pretty evident that there are a good number of people on a motorcycle that either need to brush up their skill sets or get out of riding altogether, add alcohol to the mix and that's the final piece to the puzzle. The young folks may do a more spectacular job of offing themselves but us older folks just seem to be doing it more often.

Yup...That is why I take the MSF Advanced Course every 4 or 5 years...Like it or not you can revert back to bad habits and you are never too old to learn something new...Just because I/we started riding as a kid does not mean I/we know it all...My $0.02...

Our HOG chapter put on a sign up sheet for the Advanced Riders course and so many of us signed up they had to start a second class, it's now full to.

Not a bad idea to take a class a few years.

I took that course and unless they changed it all that was covered was slow speed parking lot maneuvers.

Here you go on a large go cart track and a trainer follows you one at a time. Then they pull each rider to the side and critique you then you do it again.

They start the day in the morning with class room training before the course.
Sounds like you were on their standard training class Fatboy.

Most deaths on bikes are one rider, one bike, no car, booze, speed and a corner...

Thats why it's safer to ride in KS and FL... No turns,

Except Florida has more elderly old ladies and blind retired old guys than any other state which make it more dangerous.

Can't rule out as one gets older the read/react,periphery vision,hand/eye coordination are diminishing. They're not gone just not as good and getting worse.

you're right. I'm there. Have nowhere near the reflexes and vision, flexibility and body strength that I had years ago and I ride accordingly, more smooth than fast now

Kansas state rt 400.... You can all the way from Pittsburg,KS to Colorado. and what a great motorcycle road. Very rural but enough intermittent towns like Wichita, garden city and dodge city.
