    Hi all,

I just bought a beautifully restored 71 T500. All is good but for one thing - It is a real pain to start. Now, I am more then aware that motorcycles of thie era take a little patience but this is really playing up. Also it occasionally cuts out whilst cruising...

So far I've checked the plugs - their fine. The amount of oil going into the cylinder - (its a 2 stroke so my thought was oil was dirtying the plugs) thats fine. Battery is near new.

Only thing I think it could be is the generator... not supplying power to the battery properly causing it to go flat. There was an issue where the indicators dont work properly at low revs which I think points to this issue.

Would anyone know how to properly test the generator? And how to fix or restore it?

    Thanks!

I would first start by checking the battery connections , Then trace the grounds , down to where they hit the frame , make sure there clean, scrap paint if you need to , then double chece the pos wires for good tight connections , then try to check all wires for worn spots , wirs can/will run together & cause a short , or the mech who installed the harness might have not pluged one in tight , it's takes a little time but cost a lot less then throwing parts at it

    Thanks cowboy,

I just got a call back from the shop. Apparently they're fairly sure its a split in the fuel line which is flooding one of the carburettors...

I have never seen a Japanese bike with less than two carbs. I am sure that it is the same here which would be two.

+1...A split in a fuel line would leak...I think the float is sticking or float valve not seating....

    Thanks guys,

You might be right - the float valve might sticking and not letting enough fuel in (or too much!). I'm guessing the best way to resolve this (apart from taking the whole thing apart) is to just lightly tap the float chamber to try and dislodge it.

    Does that sound right?
