I'm in the process of bobbing the rear fender of my '98 Sportster and moving my license plate and tail light to a left side mount. I would like to put a tail light on the right side as well . . . and do away with the bat wing Sportster turn signals by incorporating them into the tail lights. Has anyone done this . . . or have an idea where I can find a schematic of how this would be wired?

Don't know who would have it , but it can't be that hard as the tail light is a 1157 like a car , test light & just ground your lights should work

That's good to know and is what I would have thought. For some reason the wiring diagrams I've found make it look like more wires are involved.

Harley sells a plug in module that makes your stock turn signals 'turn, running and stop lights. I'd think you should be able to make that work with whatever custom lights you should decide to use.

The problem I see that you need to overcome is that you're trying to get 3 functions from a 2 filament bulb(brake, running light and signal)...if you can mount/install an 1156 bulb in the tail light for signals along with the 1157 that's already there for brake/running light....only other option I can think of would be to install a one way diode in each signal line and tap into the running light line, but I'm not sure that would work or if it did how long the bulb would last....

Those units light up the signal light bulbs to add the brake/run function to them...he would still need the 1156 bulb...

my streetglide uses single filiment bulbs in the rear signal lights. gust plug in the mod.and whalla..turn,run,stop!...must send a reduced voltage to lights for run function.

Yes that's correct...mine too....the OP wants to have his dual filament tail light operate 3 functions with out a signal light...not quite the same thing....your taillight still only performs the running/stop function....the unit on yours adds the brake /running function to your single filament signal light, he wants to eliminate that light bulb

He says he wants lghts on both sides ine the rear,Right? So why not make the signal lights his rear turn run and brake lights? He can use any bolt on sigle lights he wants. Also his license light would be a running, stop light. Any way making a solution for what he wants doesn't seem to hard.JMO:cool:

OK, now I have more food for thought. Let me break it down.

I want to wire it up like a hot rod. My hot rod has a two filiment bulb for each tail light and it does turn, run and stop functions. Since the hot rod uses a professional fuse block and I don't have a wiring schematic for it I can't really tell what goes where.

    On the Sportster I have 6 wires . . .
    1) stop
    2) left turn
    3) right turn
    4) running (tail & parking)
    5) ground
    6) international (not used)

My question is if the turn signal wire goes to one wire on the tail light and the other wire is used for the running (tail and parking) light function then where does the brake light wire go?

And visa versa if the brake like wire goes to one of the wires instead of the turn signal wire then where does the turn signal wire go?

It couldn't possibly be as simple as the turn and brake light wires both go to the same wire on the tail light could it?

I don't find the local Harley dealer all that helpful but I'll check with this weekend and see what in anything they have or recommend . . . other than leave it stock.

    Thanks for the feedback

if you run the 1157 in both side like your hotrod , & use a jump wire to the brake light side it should work , as brake light & turn are the same

IF your sporty is now stock, you have a 2 filliment bulb in your tail light and single filliments in your signal lights..Just move your wires to tail light wherever you want your plate mounted.Use a 2 filliment bulb there..Now buy your Custom signal lights with single filliment bulbs and hook in the Stop,Turn.Run module..Ta Da. ! There is also aftermarket modules that are just Stop,Turn,no running .

What do you mean by "professional" fuse block?? If you're getting all 3 functions from an 1157 bulb, there must be an electronic module in your tail light wiring circuit to allow it to function like that...similar to the module that charlie 46 mentions for bikes to run their signals as run turn and brake...I think the secret is in that fuse block...
