I have a 98 Fatboy with a problem with the inside tank coating peeling and clogging the fuel system.

Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Bruce

you might want to try KREME tank sealer.ive used it for years with no problems when the instructions are followed properly.i would suggest you clean the tank with BBs before you start with the first step of the application process. add a small pack of BBs to the tanks and gently shake until the loose scale is remove.do not use nuts and bolts or anything else with an angular edge.the BBs will not dent your tanks from the inside.using a a good deterrgent such as dawn with the BBs will not only remove scale but also oil film.hope thias helps.

    Thanks motorsickledoc!
I never thought of bb's, I like the idea. I'll look into the KREME too.

    tank cleaning

I had the same problem (very bad). Clogged the fuel cross-over line and carb. Took the tank to a radiator shop where they filled it with some type of acid. They let it sit for a few days to clean out the old peeling sealer. They cleaned it out and resealed it. This shop came highly recommended or I would have worried. The acid they use will remove the paint from the tank. The results were great.

    Rusty tank

    Howdy

Just repaired a 2000 dyna tank, rust and peel. I used POR 15.
Bought it on line. It must be done in the order that is called for. I found that the stripper worked good. Should have waited longer and let it really eat up the coating that was peeling. I waited about an hour, should be at least two hours or more.
It's working fine as of 1/12/09 no gunk in the lines. I put an inline filter and have been checking regular.
I also used ball bearings about 1/4 inch. Counted them before using so I know I got them all before I used POR 15. Was not happy with the results of using the bearings. Waste of time.

Thanks for the reply Cliff and Hill Billy Ed, I appreciate it. I believe I'm armed with enough info to tackle this on my own.
    I'll post my results!

    Thanks,
    Bruce

Can't beat the BB's route for cleaning out the inside of the tank. I did that then used the KREME kit to finish up - it's workin fine for over a year now with no problems.

I wish I would have taken the advice from your replies and attempted this myself. But, I foolishly took my perfect tanks over to a radiator shop at the suggestion of my local Harley shop and they ended up dropping one.

The coating seems to be working, but the stuff was smeared all over the tanks that I had to polish off with my machine buffer, not to mention the golf ball sized dent in one!

When you want something done right, YOU SHOULD DO IT YOURSELF!

    Thanks,
    Bruce
