I've been having an intermittent problem with my 2000 883C. Sometimes I can ride it 60-100 miles and everything is fine. Other times I can go 5 miles and it stops. Cranks but doesn't start. I've tried looking at different things but after awhile it starts making it harder to track down. I put on a new petcock and vapor valve but no luck. A friend said that I could still be getting a vapor lock from the gas cap. So today I took it off and tried to blow through it from the threaded end (backwards I guess you could say) and it's blocked. Is this normal for this system and this be the bad guy I've been looking for? Could it be that simple?

Could be you can drill a little hole in the back side, replace it or next time you ride and the bike starts to die, loosen the cap and see if it runs.

Or just buy a cheap cap and try it. If that is not the problem you will have a spare on hand. That has happened to me, that tank has to vent. AL

    shouldn't be able to blow

You should not be able to blow through the cap, but you should be able to suck through it.
The PV valve in the cap should allow air to enter the tank, but fumes and fuel will not escape....
Also check to see if your tank has a vent line on the right hand side of the tank. I just got rid of my sportster, and the tank came stock with this line capped off, so if you change the cap to aftermarket, you will no longer have a vent. I cracked my tank like that, and had to buy a new one.
