agreed, better than nothing. the thing texas is trying to do is promote awareness among drivers......and also train riders.

Here in California they started displaying messages on the electronic signs along our freeways. These are the same signs we have for Amber alerts and traffic conditions so they don't always display the messages on any sort of consistent basis.

Also I have noticed for a few years that these electronic signs actually cause more problems than they cure. Every time a new message is displayed the traffic approaching these signs on the freeway is slowed to a crawl while people read it. Stupid people here argue that they can multi-task and drive while on their cell phones, yet they can't drive and read a sign without letting off the accelerator! :witsend:

Unfortunately California has one of the highest fatality rates for motorcyclists in the nation. Motorcycle awareness in this state is weak at best, and occasional polls of California drivers who commute daily on Southern California freeways often shows a resentment toward riders splitting lanes (legal here). This could be largely caused by younger sportsbike riders who split freeway lanes at high speed creating their own hazard. I personally favor lane splitting for California freeways as long as it is done responsibly. Many freeways here have carpool lanes with a gap between them and the fast lane. This is the perfect area to split lanes safely. Those who abuse this right make a bad impression for all of us and I often see drivers take out their frustration by riding the carpool lines or squeezing out riders. I would like to see such activity treated as attempted assault with a deadly weapon. If you pointed your car at a pedestrian you would be locked up, yet doing so toward a motorcyclist is virtually ignored.
