Congrats on taking the steps to be "dealer independent" LOL
Just FYI go to the dealer and order the service manual AND the parts manual, both are very valuable as they have the steps for everything to maintain the bike, torque values, etc. The parts book is great because the diagrams are better and you can get the PN so you can shop by phone.

Adjusting the cables is pretty simple,
ON the cables by the throttle are two threaded cable ends, one is the pull cable.

Remove the air cleaner cover and air cleaner
Then looking inside the intake twist the throttle open slowly to wide open,
see if the throttle plate becomes horizontal when you are at WOT.

    It shouldn't go past horizontal

To adjust you turn (lengthen) the cable with the large adjustment nut,
once you have the pull or opening cable set, you adjust the other return cable.

with the throttle closed inspect the cable at the carb/TBI and take out the slack in the cable it doesn't have to be super tight in fact a little loose isn't bad, it really is your preference and once you set it you should be able to twist the throttle to 100% and let go and it should snap shut, if not loosen the return cable.

Lock them down with the lock nut and you are done.

Thanks for your help! I had no problem with the open throttle cable adjustment. The close cable I'm not to sure of. With the handle bars straight ahead I adjusted the close until it snapped shut. However when I turned the handle bars to the extreme right it didn't return, extreme left was alright. I readjusted so it would snap shut when turned to the extreme right but now the throttle has much more play than I like. Is this the way it's going to be?? Prior to changing the grips I didn't have this condition. Did I do something wrong??

no just adjust to the middle
did you lube the cables? It might help

check to be sure one of the cables isn't binding look at the throttle body where the cables connect, there are two tubes the ends fit into, might have jumped out and you are really not adjusting properly.

    Broken Cable

Does anyone have a good lubricant for throttle cables? I broke one last week (6 months after my 5K checkup at the dealer).

Also, if anyone is in Bangor Maine, stop by the Harley dealer, those guys took care of us last Aug with a tire change and even gave us lunch while we waited.

    2006 ultra classic.
Adjusted cable for correct amount of free play but when I start the bike and ride the free play tightens up. Any ideas??
