:gah: I just had to vent. :witsend: My wife and I were leaving the house this morninng for a relaxing ride in the country. Before I could get off of the oil top and on to the highway, a pit bull and another heinz 57 ran out into the street to nip at my legs. The pit bull was close enough that I kicked it in the head. They have done this before and each time the owners are there and never try to call the dogs back or anything. Not that the dogs would mind anyway.
I haven't called the sherriff's department yet, to see if the owners would be liable if I wrecked because of the dogs. I'm sure that this happens to everyone but I was wondering how it was handled. Gun to the dog? Baseball bat to the owner? I don't like jail either so those options are out.
Besides the dogs, it was a great day to ride. We tried to keep up with a group on their way to Milwaukee but they were hookin' em.

a good squirting bottle/squirtgun of straight amonia or bleach. a couple times of this, and they will stop it.
also, are there leash laws where your at?....if so then the sherriffs dept should be notified and your question should be answered. the sherriff should also talk to the owners if you complain about it.........:)

Those are great ideas. I'll have to try the amonia first to see if I get any on me before I use the skunk piss:roflmao:
No leash laws here in the country but I'm going to speak:rant: to the sherriff about the liability.
I feel better already. Thanks for the advise and I'll let ya'll know what happens.

I don't care what state you live in, if you own an animal and it damages property or kills something the owner is liable.

Last November my neighbors dog, half dog & half wolf got loose & hurt one of my goats really seriously. It made it back to it's owners property before I could do anything about it. His wife was stitching my goats neck and He asked if there was anything he could do, I said get rid of the wolf dog give it away or shoot it. He did neither, then in January it broke off its chain again and broke into the kennel where I was keeping my ingured goat and ripped his throat out. This time he did not make it back home, but instead died of lead poisoning. Then I called the police so they could come out and I could give a report of what had happened. I like my neighbor and I did not sue him or ask for any money, but I was very upset. First of all that goat was my herd sire. Second I hated to kill someone elses pet, especially if he would have listened and found him another home.:banghead:

come on guys, wouldn't it just be easier to stop at the guys house and tell him to keep his dogs off the road, don't get me wrong I think if you own a dog or whatever you need to be responable for the well being of the animal, not only is it anoying for you ride'n your bike but what if the dog got smacked by a car, It's not the dogs falt that the owner is a azz. I sure wouldn't want someone spraying bleach or amonia in my dogs face, don't you think that could blind or permamently injure the animal, then that would give the owner all the opurtunity to take your butt to the court house, then get you for felony animal abuse. think I would just go to the owner, and if it persist take it to the next level with the animal control cops, or just call animal control and make a report everyday until something happens, no leash law doesn't mean your dogs can free roam the streets and bother people and property.

Don't spray straight ammonia, you could hurt the dog, (not that it couldn't hurt you but it hasn't yet)

Get a squirt gun and fill it with vinegar and water solution, it should work as well lots of bicycle riders do that.

If you do ammonia you want 20 parts water to ammonia, you don't want to blind the dog, and it's the smell that turns them away,

Maybe you could wash the wheels in the solution lol You can use it to keep them off your property, garden etc.

I would also call the local animal control people and let them know what is going on

My buddy hit a dog, it was caught under the front wheel/ fender and he skidded to a stop, killed the dog, and he's a dog lover but the owner let it run free and was responsible for the damage to the bike as well.

The Ammonia mixed with water should do the trick, have your OL ride on teh back and practice, get a stream going, lead the dog with your shot, all you want him to do is get a wiff of the jiff...

I'm with Sportsterboy on this. There is no point in harming the dogs, and it might land you in trouble. I know in the UK it would result in you being prosecuted. The best option is to talk to the owners who should by law be responsible for their dogs. If they do nothing, then go to your local police or animal welfare group.

not hurting ...training.... hitting and beating and letting run about is the hurt, a simple squirt to detour or jolt is harmless as long as you do it reasonably smart

Well, it was another successful day of riding without dogs. I have decided to confront the owner before I do anything. Maybe they will be open to a little avoidance training with the vinegar before I step it up to amonia. But ya'll have to understand one thing about the people that live out here.....These are the same dogs that chase my cows and new born calves until they have their tongues hanging out. They have not killed any calves yet but they are capable. These are the same dogs that have killed my chickens and cats. These are the same dogs that drag my boots and anything else that isn't tied down off the porch and off into the woods. The way they found their way to my house is that the MORON owners take walks with the dogs and let them run free thru my place. These are the same people that once they get evicted from their house they leave all of their pets to fend for themselves or become coyote meat. My Mom always told me that it was best to turn the other cheek. That is how I got my nose broke. It hasn't happened since. Thanks for all of the advise. Why can't everyone be considerate of others and get along?

sounds like you just need to call animal control, since they have killed your cats and chickens, aparentlly the owners don't want to take care of their animals, sounds more like strays, could always put up a scare and start shooting the old shotgun that might just get everyones attention, hope the talkin to them works out for ya.

Sounds like talkin to em will be like :banghead: . These people shouldn't own animals, I would be more inclined to spray the owners instead of the animals. You should call animal control and have them save these dogs from the azzholes, proper care and control they could become decent pets but not with these SOBs having them.

I wasn't on my bike but I had a Rot try to make a chew toy out of me once...Shot him in the top of the head with a 9mm....the bullet hit his skull, traveled along the side of his skull, came out his jaw and mashed into the sidewalk. The dog only yelped & ran off...could have easily came back. I now have a .45 ACP. I have no problem protecting myself if unprovoked from man or animal, theres no reason I shouldn't.
