Torque Wrench vs. portable bike lift/jack

I’d have to go with the torque wrench. Having the right torque is one of the keys to keeping your cycle together. The floor jacks are great if you do your own wheel removel or engine, tranny work, adjusting ect. For oil changes? You can buy an inexpensive step-stool for the OL and tell her you’ll be right at her side incase she fell over.

I have torque wrenches in 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 I have a floor jack and I have several ladders from when I was painting this castle....so...I would give the gift certificate to Mrs Bear and she would squeal and be very demonstrative on how pleased she was.....and I would probably use the step ladder I have to put up a new ceiling fan, lol.

This Is A Real Hard One

I say it all depends on if you are going to be using one more then the other.

Are you working on the bike now that you need a wrench? If not I would go for the jack. It is much ezier to borrow a torque wrench or even get one loaned to you from the auto parts store. They are loaning tools now here in Vegas. So they must be doing it else where.
Plus you will get much more use out of the jack. I use mine not just for wrenching. I use it every time I clean the bike. Think about this one.
How many times do you have to move the bike to get your tires and rims clean????? When it is up in the air I sit on my stool that has wheels and roll around the bike and spin my wheels. Thats my take on this and I am sticking to it............. GUMBY PEACE 4-NYC

P.s When You Do Go For A Ladder

Go to Lowes and get the one that you can make into either a steep ladder or it becomes an extension ladder. It also becomes two ladders that you can put a 2x12 accross and have a platform to walk on. This way you don't have to keep moving the ladder. The legs also can move up or down so that you can work on uneven areas. If you have ever seen the infomercial for that $500.00 ladder. This is the same thing or close to it. The big diff. is the price.
When I bought my house I needed all sorts of ladders. Then I saw this one and now instead of having 3 diff. ladders hanging around, I only have one that does it all.... The best move I made as far as ladders go..GUMBY PEACE

Have a nice motorcycle lift. Takes up too much room for another. Have about 8 ladders, but could probably use one of those like gumby321 mentions. Only have 3 torque wrenches. That's the way I'd go. I don't have one for big torques. Oh...regardless what I get, I'll have to do something special for the Queen.

get the stand first

if ya get the stand first then you can do a multitude of things to your bike and not break your back trying to access 'em. secondly get the torque wrench. But read your manual first to decide on what type of torque ing you need to do. Up here in the great white north we have ft pounds and metric ones also look for the size of drive what drive sockets do you have that will fit on your ride? and lastly never , ever get a ladder! you'll find the honey do list getting larger and less time for riding.

Al the jacks I have sen or tried to use for that bit of money would not lift the bike without tiltling themsleves... take the torques if ya really tinker much it'll be the way. LOL have fun!!! Then again the ladder....

Hate to sound like di*k but I have all of the above.....As a contractor, I got more F-ing ladders than I care to own. I bought the bike LIFT, not the jack, because I thought it was more stable. And, I have the torque wrench because I wanted to make sure I have the proper tools to work on my scoot.

You guys got it all wrong, here is what you do: Go to Lows and scalp the gift card for as much as you can get. Go to the jewelery dept at Walmart, they have a nice selection of inexpensive diamond rings, you may have to add a little cash. Get her a ring, diamond of course, that is small and close set. Give it to her and tell her that you got it to wear under her riding gloves so she could have a nice diamond to ware when you are riding and stop for lunch and a brew. In my case, start to make off hand comments about the new seats they have for the Dyna and how much more comfortable the passenger seat is.

Wait for Fathers day! There should be a new Dyna to go with the ring. Now all you have to do is tell her you need whatever to keep the Dyna in pristeen shape to match her ring (that's only for tough cases). Tell her she gets to pick out the bling for the bike and you will pick out the performance items.

Works for me, did it twice, 99 1200S Sportster and 06 Dyna Super Glide. Oh yeah, got the torque wrenches and a mc jack.

My opinion,

Get a motorcycle jack, you might want to remove wheels or shocks. If you have a neighbor like me, you can borrow one or several ladders or whatever torque wrench you need(I have enough air hose to reach either neighbor and trust me, they know I have air tools). Most people are friendly if you let them.
I try to limit myself on the low use items and make sure that I share what I have so that everyone does not need to have so much s***.
