Does anyone know if it is possible to swap the transmission on my 1983 FXE into my 1971 FXWG?
The '83 is a kicker and the 71 is an automatic. The '83 is a 93 ci motor and the 71 is a 88ci. I want to be able to kick start the 88ci motor. The 93ci is high compression and not kick friendly. at all. I don't think King kong could kick start it. Anyway, any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes the other bike is elec and kick. So they should swap. Thanks Cowboy.

How do I get the motor compensator bolt torqued up? Is an impact wrench the only way?
Any tricks on breaking it loose when I start the job? Should a breaker bar do it? I already have a clutch hub puller ready to go. I got a impact too but it's 3 years old and I think the seals are shot because it's not holding the torque.
    Thanks for the helpful info.

    Impact off, Torque wrench on....

It should have been put on with Red loctite.

You can take a small propane torch bottle
to it for a short while, heat causes the red loctite
to become liquefied and thus you can get off easier.

You'll need some kind of bar to put between the
clutch basket and comp gear to lock them so the chain won't turn
or you'll be unable to get it off.

Impact will spin it right off...

A block of wood in the way will hold it , just make sure you clean it good & if the wood splits any clean it real good as a small piece can mess the chain/belt

    cool thanks. Next question is:...
What size is the bolt that holds the clutch hub onto the tranny.
    I think it's 1 1/8" and it's reverse thread.
    It's a standard 1983 HD tranny.
    Thanks guys!

The 1 1/2" is the engine shaft nut. The tranny nut is smaller. Thanks, I will try 1 1/8" cause 1 1/4" is too big. It seems like I always a bunch of extra sockets but I never have the one I need.
    We live and learn, right?
Soon I will have all the tools I need to remove the motor and trans for my two bikes.
    Thanks guys.

Exactly how I've built up my tools as well. There's a guy at a local shop that thinks my name is Backagain because that's what he says everytime I come in for another tool.

ok. I have acquired all the required tools to do the tranny swap.
The next question is: How do I torque the nuts that hold the clutch hub and the motor sprocket when installing a belt drive? I have the primary locking tool that works with the primary chain. Do I use that tool with the belt too? Or do I just tighten the nuts with my impact wrench and call it done? This is the first time I'm attempting this so any input will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks guys!!

i dont think that particular tool will work with the belt system. if you have an old clutch plate, remove the linings, weld a piece of steel to the plate making sure you dont cover any of the holes, and use it to hold the clutch basket from turning, it should also hold the crank from turning......

Chuck, do you mean something like a bar that can be held with my hand to prevent the clutch basket from turning as I tighten the nuts? I can see that working. What you are saying is another specialty or homemade tool is required.
Cowboy, I am installing a primary belt. The problem is how do I keep the clutch hub and crank from spinning when I tighten the nuts that hold the crank pulley and clutch hub.
    thanks guys!

yes it is a homemade tool.....i made the handle long enough to catch the floor when using....and the belt will need to be installed to use it on the crankshaft. put your socket through the center hole to get to the nut and the tool on the plate studs.....

Thanks Guys! Attached is a pic of the blue bike about 2 years ago. I am working on it now. The red bike's primary belt will be next. I am going to go with a 3" open belt and a kick starter.
I'm tierd of the fluid leaking onto my front porch.
I just bought the red bike for $3000. I got a sweet deal~!
