I am new to Harley Davidson and this forum and am greatly impressed with the knowledge of its members. This is what is going on with my bike and I welcome any and all comments.

I have an 09 Road King. I am purchasing the V&H dresser duals to go along with my V&H basic slip ons and a big sucker air filter. There is a local bike shop run by a couple of highly recommended long time Harley tuners that are going to do the installation and dyno work. After the dyno is complete the map is sent to a "dircect link key" they then flash into the stock ECM. You are able to keep this "key" in case you do any other modification (cams, etc) and can use it to reflash the ECM.

Since my bike is only 10 months old, I am currently holding off on cam work so I do not void the engine warranty. The cams they recommend are Andrews tw-54. They are bolt on and will work with the 96" and the 103" if I choose to have that work done at a later date. Anybody use these tw-54 cams before and care to comment on their performance? My style of riding is not a desire to go 130 miles an hour on the freeway, but I want to be able to pass without stress, and I want to get off the light when two up with ease, and I love that Harley roar.

I realize with this stage 1 work will increase my perfomance but will I get more roar out of the dual exhaust pipes? Thanks in advance.

    hang on
Lets kill the myth that you have to use a HD dealer or the warranty is void, it's simply
    a wife tale...

Magnusson Moss under the FTC prohibits manufacturers from requiring the consumer to use the manuf dealer for work, and, it also prohibits them from requiring "official" manufacturing parts to maintain the warranty.

If they do specificy that (which HD doesn't) the manufacturer would have to give them to the consumer for free.

I don't see free oil changes at HD dealers happening...

You can do the work yourself or any indy shop can do the work. Just keep records of the date, time and miles and receipts to prove the work was done.

Who are you using in detroit?

HRK is 100% correct even in Canada all you need is proof of purchase on oil/filter at proper intervals and as long as HD hasn't blacklisted the cams - go for it!

Not this week though 55-60 and sunny all week around here (I'm across the river just outside of Windsor) Got some x-mas lights to hang and I'll be back on the road!! :fight:

I live a little south of Detroit, in Newport. I figured 99.9% of the participants on this site would have never have heard of Newport. In Monroe there is a shop called EB Cycles. They pretty much work exclusively on HD motors, and that is the place where I am getting the stage 1 and the dyno work done. At this stage of the game I know people better than I know bikes, and they seem to be really square shooters. I get the bike back Thursday and will post to let all know how it worked out.

    That's fine,
I know Bill at Bishops in Detroit, they use Direct LInk to tune bikes...

    hotroadking,

We all have read threads on here about fuelpac, race tuner and powercommander. Not many mentions of the Direct Link. It sounds relatively simple. I take it the data from the dyno is sent to the direct link key you purchase and then the key is used to re-flash the stock ecm. You can then use the same key to re-flash the ecm again if you make any other modifications to the bike such as bolt on cams or a 103/106 upgrade. Have you heard anything negative about Direct Link?

just that you cant do anything to it, only the tuner can change the settings....

then again in some cases that's probably a good thing.

But all and all there should be no issues with direct link

    HRK,

I spoke with "the Hammer" at Bishop motor sports near Detroit. When I talked to him, I did not know enough about engine work to fully appreciate his expertice. I am now, thanks to sites like this, a tad bit more informed. You seem to be one of the resident cam experts. There is a lot of talk on this site about different cams. Have you any working knowledge with the Andrews tw-54 cams? I have been told they are bolt on and work well with the 96" and even better with the 103. I am not a high end speed freak. I want to get off the line well and have good passing ability on the e-way. Will these do the trick? Or do you still recommend the Woods 6?

Far from expert unless you count cash - leaving the wallet LOL

I have not run the 54's but I know of several who have run them
and really like them in the 96 and 103's it is a cam that can span the two
displacements easily (we are talking a whopping 7 cui)

I prefer the woods cams as they tend to be more aggressive
and get on the power quicker, the Andrews have always
worked well but felt a bit lazy to me, then again
I've also considered a blower on my 124 so I'm at the extreme edge anyway.

    Either will work,
Bill will probably like the 54 and it would be a good selection.

Just returned from picking up my 09 Road King from the dyno tunner. Had V&H dresser dual header pipes (with my V&H basic slip ons), big sucker air filter, dyno work with direct link and the bike definity performes better. The horsepower went from 62.32 to 74.15 and the torque from 75.45 to 83.92. The torque stays above 80 all the way to 4700 rpms. Stock torque was around 70 @ 4700 rpms.

The bike also has a much louder rumble. You do not have to roll the throttle nearly as much to make it roar! All in all a good investment. They even put some chrome on at the rear of the air cleaner to add to the 60 or so pieces I already have on the machine.
