Hey guys, I just signed up a few mins ago. I'm looking for some advice on future plans I have for my 1989 FLHS. I want to get a little more power out of my bike by next spring. This spring-fall I plan on having or possibly redoing my top end gaskets.

Currently I am running samson exhaust with straight drag pipes, S&S Super E Carb, stock H-D plugs & 7mm plug wires but I am not sure what my ignition module or my coil is. The items listed above all complete a stage 1 kit correct?
So here is my question, I am looking to add an Andrews cam EV-27 so what else would I have to do when adding the cam or having it added by a shop? I'm looking for a stage 2 set up by the end of fall.
Well thanks for any & all responses!!

Cams are the ideal upgrade for the setup you described. Beyond that would be a big bore build to increase total displacement, but you want to make sure your bottom end is in good shape first.

Well my baby actually needs a lot of work or so I think. I have a minor leak at the base of the rear cylinder, another on the front cylinder below the rocker boxes, & one last major issue which from what I read was a design flaw by H-D that they do nothing about which is the seal in my crank case leaks. I almost dropped $2300 to fix then found out a little power is all im losing & its not a need to fix right away serious issue. Anyways I plan on taking care of these before dropping a new cam in it.
Thanks for the response, really appreciate it!

If you are going to drop $2300, then pull the engine and put it in the corner for later use, buy a new engine from Ultima like a 100 CUI or Rev Tech and drop it in, you'll have all the power a warranty and a brand new engine.

You'll never get the power per $ out of the Evo you have no way I'd drop that amount of cash into it.

Having said that if you are going to redo the Evo then base gasket leaks are somewhat common, pulling the heads and cyl are not that big a deal, you might have the cyl honed to clean them up and put in new rings.

I wouldn't put more than a EV-27, have the heads cleaned up for a street port at about $400 max cost, and change the pipes, the samson drags are killing your power..

JMO I would do a budget and see what it's going to cost to rebuild it, and what it would cost to replace it. Ultima sells through it's own outlet Aftermarket & Custom Motorcycle Parts - Harley Davidson Parts - Cycles

Check on the cost of one of the engines, they are USA company...

lol, thanks for the response but I think you skimmed instead of reading my post. I was almost conned out of $2300. The leak is nothing very minor. I haven't priced it all out yet but I have been looking around. I think I rather rebuild my engine over winter so I can learn to do the work myself than just buy a new engine. I'm not looking for tons of power & I want top keep my EVO engine as long as I can. Good suggestion though, I've looked up the cam, gasket kits, & pushrods for this fall. I'm not sure if I see the crank case as a worthy investment. $1100-ish without labor for a case I only need a seal in & that only leaks 1/3 of quart of oil every 900+ miles.

that is not a leak, it is marking its spot!!!!!:D

the reason for most base gaskets leaking is due to the dissimilar metals. the engine needs to be warmed up before taking off on it. not letting it warm up causes the warpage. evos are a good solid engine, if taken care of and will give lots of trouble free mileage. if ya looking for a street racer, look for a sporty! the weight to power ratio is a lot better!!!!

Not looking for a street racer, just upgrading to a stage 2 for a little more power to help keep up with some friends on take off & to add some fun to the mix in the form of a little more get up n go power.
I wasn't the original owner of the bike so this leak could of been there for years. As I said it's so minor & wasn't found until more than a year of owning the bike b/c my clutch was slipping. My mechanic opened the primary case & oil just ran out it was so full. I know a lot more of what to watch for now & price wise unless I"m losing 10hp off that leak I do not plan on investing in it soon.
