I Just Started Changing Out Voltage Reg On Shovel. Connector To
Stator Looks Like It Is About To Fall Back Into The Casing. Any
Sugestions? Or Just Start Taking The Outer Primary Cover Off?

That's a tuff call there should be a retainer inside backing up the plug may have fallen out. If you do go inside the primary drive will have to come off to access stator. You may be able to pull the plug out some with a dental style pic if you choose not to go inside. Dutch

FWIW everytime well almost everytime I try and shortcut something to fix a problem I end up doing it the right way, so I end up doubling the time to fix something or futzing something up and doubling the time LOL

I'm with you hotrodking, had same problem on my 80fxe. Becarefull, if u keep trying to pull connector out,try not to break a pin!! Then you are (screwed).
OOP'S,can i say that?? Also if u don't get a good connection, when u plug it in, you could burn up reg. The two wires inside could get bare spot and short out are break, then burn up stator. You know how to check stator? Last time I bought one is was 300.00. I had to kick start mine for summer, did not want to stop riding.

Pull it apart! Like previous posts say, you do not want to smell the stator frying. Good time to inspect the chain, shoe etc anyway.

Take the stator off and inspect it carefully. A new stator is far less than a toasted regulator and stator. Stators are usually under $100.00 now.

    I agree with CD

My 80FX did fry the stator, it was my fault, my plug also tried to fall in and I tried to pull it gently out, it worked or so I thought, should have done it right the first time, cost me a reg, stator an ridin time so just take the time to do it right, you wont be like me also it would be a good time to upgrade to a higher output stator to boot

    Sparky lives!

Nah, really easy to do. Disconnect your regulator and start the bike. Wet your finger tips and put them on the prongs. I you get a nice heavy zap, you're all set.;)

Actually, a safer way would be to remove the regulator plug and use a multimeter like we explain here.

If you find a bad coil on the stator, you can re-wire it. I rewired two at the sametime, lasted 3yrs.It will save you a little money. If you drive a shovel long enough one will fail. The keeper are the two little screws.
